Corduroy

Don Freeman's classic character, Corduroy, is even more popular today then he was when he first came on the scene over thirty years ago. These favorite titles are ready for another generation of children to love.
Have you ever dreamed of being locked in a department store at night? The endearing story of Corduroy paints a picture of the adventures that might unfold (for a teddy bear at least) in such a situation. When all the shoppers have gone home for the night, Corduroy climbs down from the shelf to look for his missing button. It's a brave new world! He accidentally gets on an elevator that he thinks must be a mountain and sees the furniture section that he thinks must be a palace. He tries to pull a button off the mattress, but he ends up falling off the bed and knocking over a lamp. The night watchman hears the crash, finds Corduroy, and puts him back on the shelf downstairs. The next morning, he finds that it's his lucky day! A little girl buys him with money she saved in her piggy bank and takes him home to her room. Corduroy decides that this must be home and that Lisa must be his friend. Youngsters will never get tired of this toy-comes-alive tale with a happy ending, so you may also want to seek out Dan Freeman's next creation, A Pocket for Corduroy. (Ages 3 to 8)

We really enjoyed this book and reading it to our daughter - who is nearly three. It not only captivates her imagination but is full of wonderful old fashioned values - particularly of being "liked for the person who you are". I would highly recommend it.

Although I read all kinds of books as a kid, I never got to read Corduroy before last week when a friend of mine gave it to me.
I wish I had known about it when I was teaching elementary school. I had some kids in my class that kinda fit that "I'm imperfect, somebody please love me" mode. This would have been perfect for them. It would have shown them that such love was possible.
I found it touching. I'm going to make it a permanent baby gift.

I actually have not read this book for years and was delighted when I found it again. For something so simple, it certainly packs a respectable adventure and plenty of heart. Corduroy is an adorable bear, and his department store is very nostolgic.

This is a good book about the adventures Corduroy goes on in order to find a button. He *doesn't* find a button, but that's all right - a little (African-American, if that's relevant) girl takes him home anyway. "I like you just the way you are!"

I do find that Corduroy's dialog is a little sappy, and it's somewhat weird to me that he can actually talk to Lisa, but it's still a good book.

Sweet story with a wonderful message. As a mom by adoption, this tale has a subtle subtext that works for our family. Also nice to have characters that aren't white without hitting you over the head with "diversity".

A simple story of a teddy bears adventure of finding its missing button and ends up finding a home, it almost feels like a book for parents who are ready to adopt.

I remember watching a movie about orphans (I can't recall which one, NO....it's not Oliver), they were trying to look their best and behave their best when ever a potential parents-to-be comes by. And I sense some parallel with this story and sympathies with Corduroy.

A girl fines Corduroy in the shopping mall and wants to take him home. A mom point out the he's dusty and also is missing a button. Corduroy thinking this a problem goes in search for his missing button. In the end, he finds a home not because of his appearance but because there was someone out there who would loves him for what he is.

It's a book that makes you appreciate what you have, a good lesson to teach the kids.

Corduroy is very charming story about an adorable teddy bear who lives in a department store. No one wants him because he is missing a button from his overalls. After a night time adventure in the department store, a young girl named Lisa comes to buy Corduroy with her very own money and to take him home as her very own bear. Lisa refuses a bag for Corduroy, and lovingly carries him home. Even though Lisa loves him just the way he is, she sews a new button on his overalls to make him more comfortable. Corduroy realizes that at last he has a home and a friend; the two things he has always wanted most.

This warm and heartfelt story teaches children the all important life lessons of unconditional love and a true home. Every child wants and NEEDS to be loved for who and what they are, no matter what mischief the get into. While everyone else ignored Corduroy simply because he was missing a button, to Lisa he was the perfect bear to take home and love completely.

Apparently, Corduroy is classic that has been around for many years. While I missed this story during my childhood, I more than thrilled to share it with my 3 year old. Corduroy is well loved in our house, and he will be in yours, too.

At our house we don't read just at bedtime--which means we read dozens of books a day. I was looking to add to our bookshelf in the area of beloved favorites. From the nostalgic reviews I thought I had a winner in Corduroy but alas neither the one reading nor the listeners seem to be as as enchanted as I was hoping. It is just an okay book.

There are positive aspects worth mentioning. We have adopted 3 dark skinned children so the main characters reflecting the same also added to the plus column for me. For little ones there is a bit of adventure with nothing scary. It ends on a happy note. For 5 to 7 year olds beginning to read on their own the text on each page is limited and the picture depicts the text. The red cover makes it easy to spot on the bookshelf which will help to identify it quickly if it is a favorite.

While browsing books for my 21month old daughter, I came across "Corduroy," which I fondly remembered as one of my own childhood favorites... After receiving & reading it with my daughter, I could see why. The story of the little stuffed bear searching for his lost button so that someone will buy him & take him home is as endearing now as when I first heard it 35 years ago! The illustrations are simple but sweet, and the idea of a stuffed bear coming to life & roaming through the "palace" of a department store in which he lives is a fantasy that's appealing to readers of ANY age. There's even suspense; will the Night Watchman catch Corduroy before his quest is complete? Despite his modest and imperfect appearance, Corduroy is finally "chosen" by the little girl, Lisa, and he finds the true meaning of friendship, love, and "home." While the age-old message that external beauty doesn't matter & it's what's inside that truly counts could've come off as corny and/or cliched, Corduroy's story somehow keeps it charming & poignant-I guess thats why I remembered this book with such affection!

When I first stumbled upon this product I thought it was a board book of the original Corduroy story. On the website when I found the original (which is what I wanted) it had a link saying they also had this in board book form. So that's what I thought I was getting. I wanted board book for my 4-month-old son because they are more durable. But it's actually a book based on the character of Corduroy. Its' a boring story listing things Corduroy did that day. It jumps from one thing to the other and isn't really a story at all but rather a list of random errands. I was disappointed to say the least.

My bestfriend is having a baby in April and for her baby shower, instead of giving cards, we were all instructed to buy a book to start "Baby's" library. We were told to write a message to "Baby" in the book. I thought this was a really cute idea and had never heard of anyone doing it before! I picked this book because I remember it being one of my favorite books when I was growing up. I also got "Goodnight Moon" because it was my friend's favorite book. I figured this way "Baby" can have both of our favorite books to help get his/hers library started and it would be a neat little connection for us!

(Hide Review...)  Beware the Board Book Edition!
Reviewer Permalink
The bear-shaped board book "edition" is NOT the Corduroy story. It shouldn't even be listed as the same book. The original story is cute and poignant, and I highly recommend it. But the board book has no real narrative; it is just a list of things that Corduroy does one day. There are no other characters, no dialogue, no conflict or issues, no rhyming, nothing but "Corduroy is mailing some letters." and "Corduroy takes a bath. Look at all the bubbles." The illustrations, while nice, aren't original -- they were culled from other Corduroy books.

The book is cute enough, and my 17-month old daugther loves it because it's oversized and bear-shaped. But I was disappointed not to get the actual Corduroy story, and would not have bought it if I'd known what it was. All that said, if your child already knows and likes the original Corduroy book, this might be a nice companion.

This book is basically a primer about the bear; there's no story to speak of and the little African American girl is not in the book at all. I bought this book because I was looking for a more durable version of the original Corduroy for my toddler. I am seriously thinking about returning this as I was looking to add to our library of children's books featuring African American characters. Bottom line: this is a completely different book than the original Corduroy. Don't be fooled like I was.

That having been said...it probably is a pretty good "learn to read" book, the pages are nice and big and the illustrations are cute.

This book is about sweet, honest, slightly battered teddy bear who longs for a home. Although he lives in a grand shopping center filled with fabulous wealth, this is no substitute for the warmth and affection of a mother. One of my favorite children's book is the book Corduroy, by Don Treeman. I remember that it was one of the first books that I ever read. One of my favorites part of the book is when Corduroy gets stuck in the in the shop for a long time yet a girl named Lisa still wants to keep him so she buys him but this is where it goes terribly wrong. Corduroy gets lost in the store and travels around to try to find a way out. Once Lisa notices that Corduroy is missing she quickly goes back to the shop and looks for him. She finds him on a self. But what she doesn't know is that Corduroy has traveled all through the shop looking for her. Corduroy is my favorite children's book. I kept on reading it when I was young and still do sometimes. I would definitely recommended this book to a child because it is an easy read and is very interesting to read.

(Hide Review...)  This Board Book is Not the Original Coruroy Story, but We Like it Anyway
Reviewer Permalink
When I bought this board book, its description was accompanied on Amazon.com by lots of reviews referring to the original Corduroy story, the one where the sweet bear is wandering around the department store at night, looking for a button. I had read that to my older children when they were toddlers, and wanted to buy a copy for my one-year-old twins. When the board book arrived, we realized that it is not the original story, but rather a selection of pictures taken from other Corduroy board books we already have. It shows Cordury getting dressed, playing with his trucks, and looking at his books (all from "Corduroy's Day"). I believe it has pictures from "Corduroy's Busy Street" as well.

This board book is a cut-out sort of book, so the entire book is in the shape of Corduroy Bear.

My babies have "Corduroy" dolls in their cribs, and can't seem to get enough of looking at the "real" Corduroy in the books, so this book was a success for us. However, if you are looking for the "Corduroy" story, or "A Pocket for Corduroy," you won't find them in this board-book format. When our twins are a little older and no longer rip the pages of standard books, we'll buy them a copy of the wonderful story of Corduroy. If you're looking for baby stories about Corduroy, I recommend the others: "Corduroy's Day," "Corduroy's Busy Street," and "Corduroy Visits the Doctor."

This book bores me. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of children's books, but this one just doesn't have the magic of the other classics. My kids rarely request it at story time.

However, the story does have heart and there is nothing harmful in it, so I gave it three stars.

This is a very nice story of a teddy bear in a store who has a missing button and goes off in the middle of the night to find it. It's a very simple story that really any age child can understand, and the illustrations have that feel of the 60s, at least to me which makes it charming. It's not too long, or too short, so it's the perfect bed time read for my 2 year old. I also liked that the human characters appear to be African-American which is not something you find too easily in most children's books. Overall, this is a classic and one that will be around for awhile and won't be outgrown.

I loved the book Corduroy. It remindes me of a stuffed animal i have called Spot. The main charecter in the book is Corduroy. Corduroy is abear missing a button that is on a quest to find his button and a friend to take him home. Corduroy is curious, a little naive, and is looking for a friend. I would rate Corduroy a 10 out of 10 every time.
