Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

A big happy frog, a plump purple cat, a handsome blue horse, and a soft yellow duck-- all parade across the pages of this delightful book. Children will immediately respond to Eric Carle's flat, boldly colored collages. Combined with Bill Martin's singsong text, they create unforgettable images of these endearing animals.
The gentle rhyming and gorgeous, tissue-paper collage illustrations in this classic picture book make it a dog-eared favorite on many children's bookshelves. On each page, we meet a new animal who nudges us onward to discover which creature will show up next: "Blue Horse, Blue Horse, What do you see? I see a green frog looking at me." This pattern is repeated over and over, until the pre-reader can chime in with the reader, easily predicting the next rhyme. One thing readers might not predict, however, is just what kinds of funny characters will make an appearance at the denouement! Children on the verge of reading learn best with plenty of identifiable images and rhythmic repetition. Eric Carle's good-humored style and colorful, bold illustrations (like those in The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Grouchy Ladybug, and Have You Seen My Cat?) have earned him a prominent place in the children's book hall of fame. Reviewer Permalink
I read this to my hyper-active 3 year old daughter. The repetition of the rhythm helps calm her down before going to bed as if hypnotizing. If that sounds a bit weird-out, don't worry, it doesn't really hypnotize your kid but I'm sure many of you parents might think that might a good idea at around bed-time.

(Hide Review...)  My son loves it
Reviewer Permalink
We bought this book for my 3y.o. son a couple of days ago and he loves it. Though it is very simple compared to what we usually read (he's a big Seuss fan), the pictures are colorful and very creative, and it's a great introduction to animals and colors. Plus, because of it's simple lines and rhymes, it's easy for him to remember and he likes to "read it" himself... as he is interested in "reading" stories to us this is a great experience (with his favorite Seuss books such as The cat in the Hat this is not so easy). I was a bit doubtful about buying this book because he is used to more complex stories, but I'm happy to say that it was a great buy! :-)

I bought this when my son was only a year. I had it on the shelf for a few years without much use. He picked it up one day, and we read it together when he was 3. He wanted me to read it again. That was all he needed, he started to read it back to me.. and to his brother.. and to anyone who would listen. He even recites it when the book is far away. What an impact it has had. A good buy, but wait until they are a bit older than 1. ;)

We bought this book for our twenty-one month old grandson and he just loves it. You have to read it to him four and five times and more every day. It's the book he gives to you to read to him before he goes to bed. It's a great book because he can learn his colors and see different kinds of animals. I would definitely recommend this book.

as part of the bedtime routine for my now 18 mo old boy. Of course, I am able to recite it by rote after oh, about 10,000 times. I don't even have to pay attention any more, as he knows where to turn the pages. Why do I keep doing this night after night? Because every time I ask him if he's ready for his story, he giggles with delight and runs to get Brown Bear, and Goodnight Moon, the other book of our nightly ritual. Brown Bear always comes first, Goodnight Moon always comes last. In between, we vary it with others, like Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear; Quick as a Cricket; Are You My Mother; The Very Hungry Caterpillar; Thomas the Tank Engine; etc. I love Brown Bear for making that sweet little boy express such delight at reading it.

This is my daughter's favorite book! I got it for her when she was about 6 months old (now 16 months), and I swear i've read it over 100 times by her request! That shows how much she loves this book.

The rhyming and bright colors really capture her attention. I'm sure any young child will love this book too!

People are drawn to this book for its eye-catching illustrations, but the rhythm and simplicity of the text are also wonderful. As you read this book aloud, it almost feels like singing. The story is straight-forward and engaging enough to hold a toddler's attention. Highly recommended.

In Speech Therapy at the school, they use this book to help the children in reading. The book is filled with wonderful colors and is easy to read and understand. The rhythmical storyline helps the child read along even if he or she cannot read yet. Not only will this book help your child read, it will help them develop skills for colors, shapes and names of animals. I would recommend this book to children of all ages especially beginners.

I've downloaded a song that is attributed to Raffi (although you never can tell with third-party downloads) which is this book basically sung to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. My boyfriend's daughter fell in love with the song before I knew the book existed. Maybe on the nights that you're just too tired to read, the children could look at the book along with the song.

(Hide Review...)  Bill Martin, Jr. was an amazing author and creator of children's reading books
Reviewer Permalink
Bill Martin, Jr. was an educator, author, and lover of good writing for children. Besides Brown Bear and other similar titles, he also was the editor of the Holt, Rinehart, Winston reading series "Sounds of Language". If you can find any of these old textbooks, I highly recommend them for children. I was fortunate enough to attend a 3 day workshop that Bill put on for teachers in 1973, and it was a great experience.

This is absolutely my daughters favorite book. She is almost two and we've been reading it to her since she was born. From frustratingly long car trips to her stay in the hospital this book always seems to do the trick and put her in a good mood. She loves the sing-song rhyming and the simple but beautiful illustrations. Her favorite page is the one with all of the children at the end. I remember when my daughter was having to get a shot and was very upset...my husband just had to whisper the words to this book in her ear and it instantly calmed her down. She loves this book! It is held together by duct tape and the corners are all worn from chewing but it is still going strong!

From the day we purchased this book, my daughter asks for it EVERYTIME she lies down for a nap or bedtime. I quickly learned it by heart so I could tell her the story in the dark (many times she will fall asleep before I finish). My husband however just changes the story a little bit. My daughter can now read it to us (only 21 months old) and does so often. This book has really helped her learn her animals and colors. I will be giving this book for a shower gift from now on.

My 3-year-old granddaughter found this book easy to memorize. She loved being able to anticipate which animal would be next, along with its color. My children have both enjoyed this book and my three-year-old son can tell the story from memory. Great rythym, beautiful illustrations... but once you get to the end it seems like a let down. I can't really explain it, but the rest of the book is so cute and engaging that the students/teacher part seems out of place.

I'd label this a "favorite" rather than a "classic." For classics, I look to wonderful works such as Wynken, Blynken & Nod, Aesop's Fables or a Child's Garden of Verses.

Recommended.
