| Boynton's Greatest Hits: Mo, Baa, LA LA La!/A to Z/Doggies/Bluehat, Green Hat (Boynton, Sandra. Boynton Board Books.) | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Artist Sandra Boynton has been charming adults for decades with her whimsical, animal-centric greeting cards and her droll sense of humor. When Boynton transferred her weirdly wonderful critters to board books for babies, she made publishing history. These short, hilarious books are perfectly suited to toddler tastes, with their small size, few words, cheerful colors, funny jokes, and silly animals. Blue Hat, Green Hat is all about getting dressed, and stars a very silly turkey who just doesn't get it. (Feet in the hat, pants on the head, etc.) His continuing refrain is "Oops." Moo, Baa, LA LA LA! investigates the sounds animals make, including pigs who sing. Doggies is "a counting and barking book" about the many sounds dogs can make, and A to Z frolics through the alphabet with amusing animal antics from an aardvark admiring to a zebra zigzagging. Parents love Boynton as much as kids do, and these four books in a compact boxed set will no doubt become household favorites! (Baby to age 3) --Marcie Bovetz

I love Boynton's books. They are so colorfully written...both enjoyable for the child AND the reader. They are worth reading over and over and over.

I have "oh so many" childrens books, but the ones that I don't dread reading a hundred million times (and pretend that they were lost) are all the Sandra Boynton books. They're great!

My girls are 5 and 3 and they love Sandra's books. I can't wait to get the whole collection. We have barnyard dance and snuggle puppy. My kids know every word and read/sing along the story with me.

Boynton's books were always some of my absolute favorite board books to read to my son (who is now 5) and he really enjoyed them as well. I especially liked Blue Hat, Green Hat and Doggies from this collection. As he got older, I started reading more regular books to him and one day he found his old board books in a box and eagerly went through Blue Hat, Green Hat. He always loved the "oops" :) He never seemed too fond of the A to Z book - there seemed to be a pretty short window for him on when I could read him alphabet books and he liked the Apple Car book better. These books are just the right length to read to a toddler and keep them entertained while giving them just a little bit of education.

I bought these for my daughter as potty training rewards and she loves to read them-on the potty. Her favorites change with time, but loves them all. perfect size for a toddler to hold, and much better deal to buy the set than individually.

Sandra Boynton was recommended to me by a friend when I needed new books for my 2 year old son. I was thrilled to finally find books for him that were hilarious. He now laughs out loud when he reads her books and I know he is laughing because he really 'gets it'. He also can 'read' the book to himself, well practically. If day care had required reading this should be on the list. A definite must-have for all little (and not so little) people.

We have fallen in love with these books. My son loves them and we have fun reading them with him. I didn't give 5 stars because we only really use 2 of the books. "Moo Baa LaLa" is my sons favorite. He loves the sounds the animals make and he enjoys hearing opps on "Blue Hat Green Hat". The other 2 just aren't as easy to read. We are looking forward to getting the volume 2. I think there are more "story" books in there.

My 8 month old and my 2 year old really love these books. They are creative, fun and most of them rhyme. These books help teach your child the colors, letters, animal sounds and much more. My husband and I have "Moo, Baa, La La La" memorized because it has been a favorite of my daughters for some time now. Sandra Boynton books are fabulous and sometimes even humorous.

I like all of Sandra Boynton's books thus far. Most have a catchy tune to them. All the illustrations are great. The stories are appropriate and fun. My 1 year old son loves all of her books. They are excellent shower gifts or b-day gifts as well.

I purchased these for my grand daughter who is 3 years old and she loves to sit and read them to me. The books are very sturdy so they should hold up to some abuse. The stories are short, funny and colorful. Just what you need for a busy little kid.

I have bought this collection of some of Sandra Boynton's greatest hits for baby shower gifts as well as birthday gifts to very young people. The illustrations are wonderful, the text is catchy and I love them as much as the kids do! I have found they are easy for the kids to memorize, too, which is a good first step in learning to read.

Boynton books are so much fun! My favorite is "Barnyard Dance." As soon as we pull that one open, the kids have to get up and dance. I love reading it too; wish it were longer! But my next favorite is "Blue Hat, Red Hat," included in this volume. We have also enjoyed the other books in this volume, except A to Z (which we have not read). Unlike an earlier reviewer, I think I prefer this volume to the second, overall. The books are generally shorter, making it easier for a very young one to memorize and "read" on their own. However, they're still fun for an older child. They have more educational value too (her books just tend to be fun). For example, Blue Hat reinforces colors; Moo reinforces animal sounds (this is a very short book though so don't expect a whole lot of animal sounds); Doggies reinforces counting. These books, unlike the ones in the second volume, encourage a child to participate in the reading by calling out the refrain (Blue Hat: "OOPS!" for example). It may not seem fair to review the set when I haven't read one but I wanted to provide additional comments to the earlier reviewer, who did a good job describing the differences. The other Boyntons are fast paced so they may be more difficult for a non reader to memorize all the words. It just depends on what you're looking for. These are great starters though for the younger crowd.

My son is 16 years old. We bought Sandra Boynton's books when he was a baby. The illustrations are funny and they are easy to read aloud in a funny, exaggerated way. Our son loved Boynton's books so much that, 14 years later, my husband and I can STILL recite "Moo Baa La La La." We buy them for all our friends who have babies.
There is no greater gift you can give a child than a love of reading. These were a great start for our son and for many of our friends' kids. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-08-08 04:37:13 EST)

These books are wonderful. I have to read them to my little one over and over. He is 3. They are simple enough that now we are switching roles and he reads them to me. The loves to read them and they are simple for him to understand and laugh at.

My two year old granddaughter loved these books! She insisted we read them all 3x before putting them up. Mo, Baa, LA LA La! and Doggies were her favorites. She easily remembered the stories and helped me read them when looking at the pages since the stories and words were simple and entertaining. A must have for little ones!

I love these books, as does my son. He is 2 and enjoys the silly rymes and it helps him figure out the animals that are in the book. I can read to my son at night and we can have fun doing it. I read one other review where the mother was not happy that a NINE MONTH OLD was not pleased with these books. This is not college. I like these books because they do allow kids to be silly and develop a sense of humor. Kids aren't allowed to be silly anymore. I think the best benefit that you will get out of these books as you can laugh together and actually spend quatlity time with your child reading to them.

My son (now 4) has loved these books for two years. Moo, baa, la la la has literally had the cover worn off it from reading.
While today they are not the great favorites they once were they are still returned to on a regular basis so I do not dare move them off his book shelf. The fun story and rhymes, colorful pictures, and overall playfulness make this a fun read for parents as well as children. I often use this package for gifts to share the fun! These four books are serious silliness as the back of the box set claims. My husband and I really enjoy reading them to our 4 mos old daughter (especially "Moo, Baa, LA LA La!") and know she'll love them as much as we do when she gets older.

My son loved these books! But one by one, he has destroyed them all by breaking the spines and losing the pages. He's not exceptionally rough with books, just loves them to death. We found the larger size books, like Barnyard Dance and Oh My, Oh My, Oh Dinosaurs and Birthday Monsters have held up much better. We love her stories, but these bigger books are the only ones we have left.

I bought this set for my 9 month old daughter after reading all of the rave reviews. I was excited to order the set but was dissapointed when they arrived. These books are not written well at all and the illustrations leave a lot to be desired. Honestly, anyone could have written these books. None of the books make any sense, have any real meaning or teach anything to children. The illustrations are not eye catching like they are in "Goodnight Moon". My daughter displays absolutely no interest for these books at all. She does have other books that she enjoys. There is no real benefit to reading these books to your child. If you love books like "Goodnight Moon", these books are not for you. The only benefit my child gets from these books now is she uses them to teeth on.

We love the Sandra Boynton books. This four-book set is a great starter set. Our son, one year old, likes these books more and more as he gets older. They are fun for us to read to him, and he enjoys the pictures. The drawings are very clear (not like some of the books that we have where the illustration is more like watercolor) and that makes it easy for him to tell what he's looking at. I feel like that makes these books better for learning the names of the animals, colors, etc.
All those positive things said, I personally like the titles in the Greatest Hits 2 box set better. Those four tell better stories. These four are not as narrative, with the possible exception of "Moo, Baa, La La La." "A to Z" is an alphabet book with animals, which is not narrative at all. "Doggies" is really fun because it lets you make barking noises, and our son loves the book, but again, it's not really a story. "Blue Hat, Green Hat" depicts a cute story (a turkey who doesn't know how to put clothes on properly -- wears his shoe on his head, for instance), but it has few words, so it lacks the terrific sing-songy rhythm that I love in Boynton's other books. These are good books, but if you want to experience the best of Boynton, consider Greatest Hits 2 instead of (or in addition to!) this one. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-02-22 02:37:55 EST)

My first two ladies (now 5.5 years and 4.5 years old) loved these books to death, literally, so I'll be replacing them (both Volumes One and Two) soon after the current Wiggle arrives. We all loved "Doggies" - "Nine doggies on a moonlit night AaaaaaOOOOOOOooooooo" - what fun to read! The ladies loved "The Oops Book" - Blue Hat, Green Hat - as well, because that crazy turkey just *didn't get it*. All of Sandra Boynton's books are wonderful, though.
I've been doing my best to make sure that every baby *I* know has these books in his library; everyone else should do the same. (Review Data Last Updated: 2005-10-14 04:11:05 EST)

Okay, I have to admit I haven't read A to Z and only checked out Doggies from the library. Don't take my rating wrong, we LOVE Boynton, but these aren't our favorites. Volume Two would be preferred in our house with Horns to Toes and the Going to Bed Book.
Our top-rated Boynton books for a collection would be Horns to Toes, One Two Three!, The Going to Bed Book, Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs, Pajama Time, Barnyard Dance, and Moo Baa La La La. (Review Data Last Updated: 2005-09-21 01:55:57 EST)
