Advancing Beginners (Bob Books Set 2)

Bob Books Set 2: Advancing BeginnersBob Books Set 2 continues to build reading skills. Use of three-letter words and consistent vowel sounds in slightly longer stories build confidence. Children love the hilarious (and sometimes mischievous) stories and pictures. These twelve books, filled with fun, drama, and surprise keep interest high for even the youngest readers.

(Hide Review...)  Good second set... but you may not need it
Reviewer Permalink
I give this only three stars, but not because there's anything wrong with it. It's just that, if your child is really ready to read, the first set will definitely give them the tools to do so. But once they grasp the "key to castle" of sounding out that that first set delivers, they may be ready for a bigger leap than this second set offers.

We did the first set with our daughter, but then we never got more than a book or two into this one before she was picking up lots of other books we had around and checking easy readers out of the library, and completely lost interest in these. We definitely never considered any sets beyond this one.

I'd recommend the first box, but then as soon as they grasp that they CAN read, if they are anything like my daughter, kids are going to want something with more of a story. I'd recommend the Max the Cat series readers, they have more of a story to each little book, but the same difficulty levels as the Bob books. They are listed on Amazon as Phonics Practice Readers: Series A, Set 1/10 Reader's Plus Teacher's Guide

(Hide Review...)  excellent encouragement for beginning readers
Reviewer Permalink
The Bob book series are excellent for encouraging very beginning readers. Each page has only a few words and kids who are just beginning to sound out and read the stories. This makes them want to keep learning. The only thing to watch out for is kids sometimes memorize the books if they read only one or two over and over so you need to mix them up to have them actually read the books.

I've been using these with my 4 and 5 year olds and they both love them.

I liked this set but unfortunatly it contained many of the same books as the first set, which we already have. I think they could have done it a little differently. If I had it to do over again I would have either skipped this set or started off with this one and skipped the first one.

(Hide Review...)  Training the Brain
Reviewer Permalink
I am a Special Education teacher. I help children with learning disabilities (K-5) learn to read. I don't think there are words for how highly I want to reccommend these books to parents and other educators. These books are PHONICS based and they are systematic and sequential. They help train a child's brain to see the patterns in the english language. Learning these patterns is how children learn to read. Other reviews have slammed these books for being boring and low interest. Are they the most exciting and engaging books ever? No, not really. Will they help your child/student learn to read? YES, they will. And the stories have enough content that I am able to monitor comprehension with questions such as "Who was this story about?", "Why did the fox try to hide when he saw the hen?", and "How do you think the animals felt when they saw the fox?". But most importantly, it is just such a thrill to see that expression of astonished pride on the child's face when they finish reading the book to you all by themselves. It's that bewildered sense of accomplishment that makes my students willing to take on new challenges and continue improving their reading skills.

Reviewer Permalink
I am amazed at how these books have helped my 4.5 year old son take off with his reading. He eats these books up, and I have taken to letting him read one in bed at night with a little book light to encourage his reading. He even asks about the punctuation marks and what they mean! By the time he hits kindergarten I think he will be through the whole set!

These books have really helped my 5yo daughter get confident in her reading skills. I would highly recommend them to any beginning reader. They are fun stories but the words are all easy to sound out. I'm amazed at how many 3-letter words are in our language that I hadn't thought about!

My son is 5 and NOW can read all of the Bob books. He really loves them and we don't have to "make" him read them. I highly recommend the entire Bob Book collection.

I wasn't sure how my 4 year old would respond to the simple nature of the Bob books. She loves complex stories and pretty pictures. However, she surprised me and loves these books. She is flying through them and feeling success with each new book we try. I think the satisfaction of being able to "read it alone" is more satisfying than a book with pretty pictures. I would recommend these to anyone who has a child who wants to read on their own! This is a great place to start the journey.

If you have already tried the Bob's books 1 & 2 you already know that this is an excellent starter series for begining readers who know a series of sight words that they have been taught. These sight words are used in amusing but uncomplicated sentences that give a new reader a sense of accomplishment.

A great set of beginning books- allows the child to learn the basics of reading with repetitive sounds and words- pictures to help with the association of the words.
Great for the Pre-K and K student~!

I looked everywhere for some books that my 5 year old could read as a beginning reader and nothing worked until we found the Bob Books. He loves them. Dr. Seuss was too hard and so was Sandra Boynton. He wanted to feel successful and I wanted him to practice reading. The Bob Books helped in all of these areas. They are fun books too!

We are so pleased with these books. My son started with set one and could read tentatively through that set. By the time we got to set two, his confidence increased so much that he zoomed right through this set with hardly any problems. We love the consistent sound patterns and consistent level of difficulty. And we both really get a kick out of the simple picutures that go along with the stories!

Just a wonderful set of books. Nothing makes my 5 year old prouder than being able to read these books to everyone who comes over to visit. He's turning into a person who loves to read and these books have certainly helped a lot. And as a reward for reading so well his prize is - the next set of Bob Books!

Having 10 grandkids, I have always given a book as part of the gifts for birthdays and Christmas. With their ages ranging from 3 to 15 years of age it's getting harder to come up with ideas. I gave a set of "Bob Books" to one of my 4 year old grandaughters and she loves them. She now feels as "big and smart" as her older brothers and sister because she too can read! They were such a hit that I bought another set for another grandaughter for her upcoming birthday. Grandma CVS

The BOB books are a fantastic series for beginning readers. As an educator I am very impressed with the process and amazed with the results. My daughter read the first series, by herself, before she started Pre-K! If your young child has an interest in reading on his/her own, this is a great place to start!

I've taught my son and his friend how to read using BOB BOOKS. They're great and easy for little guys to read. They are the most basic of books and don't frustrate the kids.

My son started with the first set of Bob Books and we were thrilled. We then moved to this set which continued on where the first left off. Slightly tougher words, slightly longer pages, and new concepts gently introduced. My son LOVES his Bob books!
