A Potty for Me! : A Lift-the-Flap Instruction Manual

Mommy got me a brand new potty!

But I'm not ready yet!

I want to run and play.

Uh-oh, I peed in my pants.

But Mommy says, "That's okay!"

Children will love following along and lifting the flaps to see the child play, sit on thepotty, eat, sit on the potty, sleep, and then sit on the potty...until finally there is success.

Written from a child's point of view, this new potty-training book will help children join in the final refrain, "I'm so proud of me!"

Our son really loved Karen's "Toes, Ears and Nose" and although I was disappointed with the text in some of the manners books she wrote, I thought I would give this a try. This was the second potty book we bought-the first was "The Potty Book for Boys" which is cute and really enjoyable for our son. I was extemely shocked when we read this and, low and behold- the words in this book are almost exactly like the other book! This was confusing for our son and difficult to explain why this was almost the same. I will never buy one of her books again. Buy the other potty book and you will not be disappointed.

I've used this book when my older daughter was going through potty training. Now we are doing the same for our youngest. I loved how it emphases that it's okay to have a mishap and just to keep on trying and eventually you will say good-bye to the diaper forever.

I love the pictures in this book. They are clear and appealing to the toddler. The bad rhythm and rhyming structure, though, is jarring. In addition, the book focuses on failure a lot more than success. The baby keeps trying to go on the potty and things just don't work out for him. He finally does in the end, but I get the sense that it makes the process seem a little scary.

My 20-month old son loves this book. He's not using the potty yet, but he loves to sit on the potty and have me read this book over and over and over... I have two other potty books for young boys and he is not interested in either (can't get past about 4 pages.) This book has just enough text and the story is very sweet. He gets a HUGE smile when we get to the end and read "I'm so proud of me!"

Before we bought this book, my two-year-old never wanted to use the potty. The mere suggestion of it created temper tantrums. Therefore, I usually dropped the subject, not wanting to tramatize him by forcing the issue. When I bought this book and read it to him, he sat on the potty the very same day and went!

(Hide Review...)  Cute little book that's not gross
Reviewer Permalink
We're about to start potty training and I wanted a book about the potty that was direct without being gross. This seems to fit the bill. It has a clear message with nice pictures but doesn't specifically talk about (or show) poop. It's a sweet story that is encouraging but allows for mistakes (the child has an "accident," but does better the next time). I also like that the child's gender isn't obvious, making this an effective book for both sexes.

Reviewer Permalink
This book has excellent narrative; however, the design of the book is not kid-friendly. To begin with, the pages are easily torn. It is better if it is a harder, more cardboard type book. My biggest problem is that the flaps open to the side of each page. It is hard for my 19 month old twins to open and close properly. The flaps are the same size of each page, and they are hard to navigate. I have to open and close every page properly after the children independently look at this book. They have no problem with smaller, lift-the-flap books the open upwards instead of sideways.

I'm giving this book 3 stars because my daughter has always loved Karen Katz books and this one is no exception. She also shows interest in using the potty after we read it. However. I feel like the book is confusing to her and sends a mixed message because it spends so many pages talking about how the child in the story has no interest in the potty or tries to use the potty unsuccessfully before she finally has success. Once. I realize that those aspects happen in real life but I think it's too much for a 2-year-old to follow along with the concept. She needs a more simple, clear message: sit on the potty, use it, hooray!

I introduced this book to my daughter at a year and a half with her own little potty. She has always loved books so this was an easy choice for me. She loves the ending where the child says "I'M SO PROUD OF ME!" It encourges that the child should feel a sense of accomplishment from inside and not from their parents. I also liked that it acknowledged accidents and that its ok to have trial and error. My daughter is two now and whenever she uses the potty she points to herself and shouts the ending!

This is one of the 2 first Karen Katz books I got and I was rather disappointed, after reading so many raving reviews, I expected more. I find the pictures a little oversized for the page - she closes up on the child on the potty so much, that I am not sure my daughter always understands that the baby is actually on the potty, which kind of defeats the purpose. Also, the text feels a little awkward - it sorta rhymes, but just when you get into it, it stops rhyming.
It also failed to produce the miracle - my daughter still is not interested in potty. :-) But I guess I won't hold that against Karen Katz.
But mostly, it's the reading value - of the 4 books purchased, including Karen Katz's Counting Kisses, my daughter reaches for this one the least often, although it was the most expensive book.

This book is just ok. My 21 month old doesn't seem very interested in it even though I thought she would love the super cool flaps. I'm not really crazy about the story line either. I really wish it was more straight forward with actually going on the potty. It does the job though and gets them thinking about the potty, but it is not ideal to me.

I just purchased this book thinking it would help potty train my 15 month old. Well, I love the book itself...but its kind of long when you want to read it to them in the bathroom...and she just wants to flip through the flaps! My daughter loves books and reads every day so I thought this would be a great book for her. It might be better for the toddlers a little older than her. The illustrations are cute and the reading itself is easy to understand but I felt it might be better for 2 yrs and up. Give it a try...its always good to read to your children regardless!

I am on the cusp of potty training my little boy and wanted to use some books and videos to familiarize him with the potty and process prior to actually putting it into place. This book is a good first step. The pictures are large and the pages flip out making it fun to read. The sentences rhyme and are simple allowing my son to repeat them with me.

Reviewer Permalink
The story/plot is good; but that doesn't overcome the construction of the book itself. The pages are the thickness of cardstock. This book lasted one week before my 2 year old son tore a page out. The flaps are not your typical "lift the flap". Rather, the pages fold out (think magazine centerfold). My son likes the fold out feature; but again, it's just not durable enough for a toddler who is anxious to flip through the book. Also, the flaps aren't cut to the proper size; so when they are folded back into the book, if not placed perfectly, the book gets "bound up". I recommend you get a sturdy board book. Skip this one.

Reviewer Permalink
I wish I could give this a similar rating like you can for some things, for durability etc. Because the pages ARE rather annoying the way they fold out, and its hard for little ones to use this book themselves and not bend it in all the wrong ways.. but...

For having a good story 5 stars definately!!! This little book is cute and happy and it rhymes and has lots of nice elements in it, all of the ups and downs of what a toddler must be thinking when they're trying to potty train.

And yes sometimes its negative... But kids need to know that the negative feelings they have about things is normal. It shouldn't be diminished or averted. It also shows that those negative feelings are not the end of the story! Thats how life is, gotta get the bad stuff out of the way first before you can get to the good stuff. Pretending negative feelings don't or shouldn't exhist doesn't help have happy endings. :)But by showing that negative feelings are normal and that we're going to try again and again anyways and eventually succeed is a spectacular thing to teach, and not just for potty training. ;)

Our 15-month-old is in the early stages of potty interest, and this book has been great for reinforcing the logistics. The little rhymes are cute and catchy - if I have them memorized, I can only imagine that they are sticking with her. The illustrations are typically Katz-cute, and as a nice touch are gender-ambiguous, so this book would be great for either a little boy or girl.

I like this book well enough, and so does my 2-year-old son. I don't like that the kid in the book keeps saying that "this potty's not for me" and that he doesn't want to try it. The kid ends up doing it, but I don't like the start. And it isn't small flaps like I thought it would be, it is the whole page that flips open to another page, which is kindof hard to do and read it to someone else. But it is a good introduction to the whole potty thing, which I guess is the point.

This is pretty cute...especially if you love Karen Katz illustrations! I took the idea of wrapping our 2 year old's potty chair like a present so she could relate to the beginning of the book :) However, I found a few phrases to contradict the goal...so I change some of the words. Like, instead of saying "this potty's not for me" I say "the potty waits for me" and instead of "I still don't think I can" I say "I wonder if I can" just to take the negative implication out. I understand why she wrote it like that...to embrace the rollercoaster experience of potty training and it IS true. However, I didn't want to take a chance that our head strong daughter would go around saying "the potty's not for me" as it's already her tendency to put up a fight!

My daughter loves Karen Katz's books. And this has been added to her list of favorites. She is 18 months old and I purchased it to introduce her to the concept of potty training (other than the coming into the bathroom with mommy technique). She enjoys the illustration and the stories and I've found that after a couple of readings, she actually wanted to sit on her own potty for an extended period of time. Before the book it was a 2 second sit.

I'm very pleased with this book.

I was looking for books for my daughter's potty party, and purchased several. This one looked good, but I ended up not using it. In the book the child trys it but decides not to use it, he wants to play instead. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but we were having an intensive training day in which not using the potty wasn't really an option. The overall message of the book was good, but we aren't even showing it to our daughter.

My son loves the rhyming of this book. I was surprised that this book isn't a lift-the-flap book like "where's spot". Instead, each page is folded over on itself and that is the 'flap', but it is still a fun book that my son loves to have read to him. It helps introduce children to the potty and how fun it can be.
