Jen Nakamura Taylor thought she left behind her awkward past of growing up half-Japanese, half-white in a small Southern town when she moved north to produce a popular Chicago television show. But when she gets word that her Southern Belle cousin is marrying Kevin Peterson, the very boy Jen loved-with-a-capital-L for years, she realizes she can't run from her past forever. Not only does the news conjure up sticky memories of growing up with a mixed heritage in the South (soy sauce on chicken fried steak, anyone?) but now the very single and very busy Jen has got to find a date for the wedding -- a grand affair that could put Scarlett O'Hara to shame. Riley -- Jen's cute British friend from work -- seems just the ticket; even his girlfriend thinks it's a good idea. But as Jen and Riley whistle on down to Dixie, sparks start to fly. Add to the fire the grown-up but still charming Kevin Peterson, who appears to have a soft spot for Jen, and, well, whoa. It's going to take everything Jen has (and a lot of help from the Karate Kid-wisdom of her pop culture hero Mr. Miyagi) to survive the meeting of past and present, and of North and Far East and South...where Jen finally learns to come to terms with her heritage, her love life, and herself.

I really have no idea how this book got so many good reviews. I'm from the same town as the author and, to be honest, I was insulted by how limited she made out small towns to be. I realize that this is a work of fiction and not an autobiography, but it heavily draws on her life experience. And it seems as though the author only knows how to write stereotypes. There is absolutely no character development until the end when Jen finally realizes that her hometown isn't as bad as what she thinks and has helped to create who she has become. While this adds dimension, it seems tacked on rather than genuine. The characters, particularly Jen's family members, are caricatures and wring everything possible out of a cliche. There was also a feeble attempt at social commentary with the back-story of Jen's grandparents and her sister's constant accusations of "racial amnesia." The author's grandparents actually were sent to an internment camp and this is hardly a way to honor their struggles. I've read one other Cara Lockwood novel (which was okay--except for the overuse of parentheses), but I will not be reading another.

So when I have nothing else to read, I read my daughter's "chick lit." I'm a "bed-time reader" and just like something light to read before falling asleep. Other books belonging to my daughter that I've read have sex for the sake of sex and foul language for the sake of foul language. Not being against either when used effectively, I was most impressed by this book. A nice, easy, entertaining book; Thank you, Ms Lockwood! I'm looking forward to reading more of your stuff.

I really enjoy Cara's books and I expected this one to be just as good as her previous ones. I was wrong! I couldn't get past the second chapter as the book was just non-sensical and didn't appeal to me at all. It just seemed like random, jumbled thoughts and comments were thrown onto pages and labeled a novel.

Jen Taylor lives in Dixieland Arkasas-the product of a Japanese American mother and a European-American father. This leads Jen to some interesting dilemas as some people assume that she is Latin American or when people find out her middle name (Nakamura) they make fun of it.
Jen spent much of her childhood in love with-and trying to win Kevin Peterson-to no avail. Later Jen, who is a T.V. producer gets a shock when she gets an invite to his wedding to her blond haired blue eyed cousin Lucy. Jen convinces her friend Riley to come to the wedding with her and the stuff that happens along the way make Dixieland Sushi an interesting book to read. This was a fun book with lots of different facets. Going back to your hometown and seeing your high school crush again, and being rather surprised by how he's changed and you yourself have changed. Her multicultural background and how she dealt with being different while growing up. Lots of funny moments, and the book was so entertaining, it was read very quickly.

Its a really great book as all other Cara Lockwood's are. Others have found the flashbacks to be nothing but nostalgic and superficial, but it needs to be there give those with no bi-cultural expereinces growing up a picture of how those who do have two sides grew up. Its a fundamentally hard idea for many to grasp how the Asian_American identity crisis is built on all the experences you have growing up, unless its expereinced. In this book Lockeood illustrates it in a way that makes everyone relate so that they might come to understand.
