As a practicing Catholic who loves Mother Teresa, I was delighted to receive this book to read and review. However, as another reviewer points out, the author seems to repeat himself and the book reads like an introduction to something more powerful to come, which somehow never happens soon enough. It is written in a very impersonal tone, akin to that of an academic essay or journalistic article, and therefore fails to retain much interest. I have to admit that I, too, could not finish the book.

The message of this well-intentioned book may well be very important, but the way it is communicated by the author simply fails to grab the reader's imagination. For someone who would like to be moved and inspired by Mother Teresa's life, words, and teachings, I'd much rather recommend other books, such as "A Simple Path", "Come Be My Light", and "No Greater Love", all writings by Mother Teresa herself, which I find more powerful than any third-person narrative.

The key points of Mother Teresa's spirituality are summed up in chapters 8 and 9, while the rest of the book seems to be a commentary on them. Mother Teresa, like other saints of her time such as St. Faustina, directs our gaze away from our miserable selves, and fixes it on God - a loving, merciful God Who is infinitely thirsting for our love in return. This book, by one of the priests of her order, contains a message of hope for all those who are bowed down by their own sin or by the abuse of others. Indeed we can all benefit by pondering this message continually.

One point of doctrine, as far as I can tell, is contradicted in the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas, as well as other saints, and in Tradition: "...the Father loves all mankind with the same love, the same magnitude, and the same intensity, with which he loves his divine Son." (p. 92) Certainly, our Lord has chosen souls upon whom He lavishes His love and graces more than others, and this through no prior merit of their own. Perhaps the author's words have some other meaning, that I missed, which can be reconciled with this truth.

Other sentences need qualification, such as: "We need not beg God to bless, to forgive, or to lift us up after a fall." (p. 101) By this we must understand that God is longing to forgive us, not that we ourselves have no need of repentance.

"...Our God-given dignity is innate and cannot be lost, neither at our own hand, nor by society, nor by the abuse of others." (p. 121) According to St. Thomas, there are three ways in which we bear the image of God, which is the source of our dignity. First, according to our nature, we are in His image because we have intellect and will. This imparts a dignity which nothing takes away, even our own sin. In a second and third way, we may bear his image through grace and through the union we have with Him in heaven. We forfeit these likenesses when we commit a mortal sin.

Fr. Langford points out that Mother Teresa had an incredible gift, which was the ability to appreciate the innate and immutable dignity in each person she met, and to bring conversion and spiritual healing by communicating the love of God to those whose lives she touched. Though she preached verbally in her public addresses, these words took effect in the hearers only because she preached daily without words, by bearing the personal and unmerited love of God to those whom she encountered. Would that all Christians did the same.

I have always been fascinated with Mother Teresa's life. And what a great book to help me understand what events that might have took her life to effect her to take this particular path. I am a spiritual seeker, no longer religious, and found that this book gave me an unbiased recount of the pivotal events and time line. I have to say the religious background of the author was not a hindrance and in fact helped to explain some of the procedures and routines that any nun in that time would have had to follow. Hence, it makes what MT did was truly astounding in her time. In fact, even in today's time it is till truly outstanding. I loved the flow of the narrative and I highly recommend this book to learn about the time and life of MT and how she was able to see the connection of our souls with one and another and religion plays very little to help us see that; if not divide us most of the time.

I have read many books about Mother Teresa and for me, this book is essential for fully understanding this holy soul who is inspiration for the world. Most importantly, Fr. Langford reveals to us the essence of Mother Teresa's mission, which sanctifies believers and unbelievers alike. She, once again, through the gift Fr. Langford has given to us, leads us closer to God. A must read for anyone who desires to know her.

Thank You Fr. Langford, for sharing this look into what drove Mother Teresa's mission to serve the poor. Reading the meditation on "I Thirst" captured my spirit, brought me to tears and united me once again with the Lord. How easy it is in this world, to wander away from He who loves us, without reserve..As they say, now I know the Rest of the Story.

I tried and tried to get reading in this book but unfortunately I just could not get interested enough in it to read a substantial amount of the book after all this time. I really wanted to like it because I thought it would be interesting to read about Mother Teresa's life and how she came to be the person she was but this book didn't do it for me. It seemed to drag on forever and it repeated itself continuously (although being a preliminary copy this probably be corrected in the final copy). The "encounter" is in the beginning of the book so once I found out this info I kept reading to see what would come of it. After reading about 1/3 of the book it seems that the book has nothing more to give.

I wanted to know what made Mother Teresa tick. My curiosity is born out of my desire to cling less to the material world. I wondered, how this little woman could live and do as she did with so few "tangibles".

I enjoyed the first parts of the book, which is full of the biography of Mother Teresa's special gift, and how/when that gift happened upon her. The author, a priest who was instrumental in Mother Teresa's movement, seems to have been touched emotionally by this proclaimed saint. The author writes that he once had a moment when their minds met, and she asked him to spread the word according to what they agreed on. The message is surrounding how our Savior and our God "Thirsts for our love", and hopes that this thirst is returned. There is of course more to it than that.

This is a compassionate and thoughtful book. A lot of care and diligence had to have into this book.

The central message of the book was presented from many different angles, it really was ingrained in my mind by the time I finished the book. However, I found the book too repetitive. I understand that the author had an agreed upon message to convey, and the honor to define what he thought Mother Teresa meant by using the phrase, "I thirst" as much as she did; however, I feel it could have been conveyed in fewer pages.

Overall, I found the book inspiring, particularly while I have suffered through personal dilemmas. By comparison, Mother Teresa moved mountains simply with her faith in Jesus, her conversations with him, and her faith in God.

I apologize in advance for any misunderstandings I may have about Catholicism, religion, or the people in the book; while I was educated in Catholic schools most of my life, I do lack a deep understanding of the Bible, and various facts. I write this hoping to be somewhat objective.

Still, I am left feeling that I want to know more. Mother Teresa touches my heart.

It was a wonderful book.
I saw the movie on mother Teresa and have been wanting to know about her more.
This book offers some (I wish there was more) very rare photos.
Some quotes from other people who have met her and her message to them.
She really had the love for people and their souls.
She put the words of our Lord to practice without any reservation.
And this book shows her love for Jesus in a true form.
It's a long book in paperback.
Highly recommended!!!

I have just had the profound privilege of reading Fr. Langford's book "Mother Teresa's Secret Fire". I must tell you that I felt I was on a spiritual retreat with both Blessed Mother Teresa and Fr. Joseph Langford, M.C. While reading Page 54, which contains Mother Teresa's Letter to her Sisters, I was brought to tears upon reading how much Jesus loves all of us, sinner and saint alike. The yearning of Jesus for us to love Him in return would tear at the heart of anyone who knows the true meaning of love and what it entails to truly love someone wholeheartedly.

On Page 297, Fr. Langford's Meditation on "I Thirst for You" will forever stay with me and I will return to this Meditation time and time again, for truly knowing the love Jesus has for His children and how He longs for us to love Him would melt a heart of stone. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO FEELS ALONE, NEGLECTED, LOOKING FOR A WAY TO GET TO KNOW JESUS MORE FULLY, OR WANTS TO DISCOVER THE TRUE MEANING OF LOVE.

I have to admit that I knew of the benevolent Mother Teresa most of my life, and when she died just days after her friend Princess Diana's sudden & tragic death, I, of course, felt the loss. But after reading this book, I realize that I knew next to nothing about this woman of God and love.

The author, Father Joseph Langford, tells Mother Teresa's story with her blessing, sprung from her desire to tell the world of the deep thirst that Jesus has for our love, after this was revealed to her by Him during a train trip to Darjeeling -- a trip which transformed her life. Her sole purpose then became to share this message of the relationship that Jesus desires to have with us.

Father Langford writes of the public and the private Mother Teresa, as he becomes her close friend and associate. Often using her own words throughout the book, he relates her messsage of the love and acceptance that is waiting for all that believe in God and his son. He states that one purpose for his book is to, not only shed light on this Godly woman's life, but also to spread her message even further than she was able to do during her years on this earth.

The book contains a number of pictures of Mother Teresa (one of her lying in state), pictures of the people she ministered to in Calcutta, an anthology of her quotes spanning many years, and even an inspirational section of guided meditation for the reader.

Just as her train trip changed Mother Teresa, so will this book have a profound affect on the reader who embraces her message of "the depths of God's infinite longing to love and be loved."

I am a Catholic by religion but, I must admit, I knew very little about Mother Teresa or her life and faith. The image I had of her, prior to reading "Secret Fire", was that of a little old woman who lived in India and took care of the sickly and poor. I was amazed from reading Father Langford's book how little I really knew of this wonderful woman. Father Joseph Langford introduces us to the Godly Christian woman who was put on this earth to share God's light and love with every citizen of His world. From her encounter with God in 1946, which she kept mostly secret until the last 10 years of her life, Mother Teresa tells us about the love that God has for us all, regardless of our transgressions and shortcomings. I highly recommend Fr. Langford's "Mother Teresa's Secret Fire" to anyone whose soul is thirsting for the love of God to fill the void they are feeling. The thirst will be returned from the Lord to all of us, who he wants to know and wants to love us and for us to love him. Get this book, it is a life changing experience.

What an amazing women. Like Mother Angelica, Founder of EWTN Network, Mother Teresa has something that nearly all of us lack. That not to day it is a bad thing to lack this "fire", for if we all had what these women have, the world would be too small.

"...Secret Fire" is an amazing look at an amazing women. Read it for simply historical reasons as all know the name "Mother Teresa", or read it to encourage that special flame within you that burns to ignite into a fire of love that refuses to be quenched!

"I Thirst" would be a better title for Mother Teresa's Secret Fire by Joseph Langford, a Cahtolic priest. Over and over again in this book the theme of spiritual thirst is mentioned. Some chapters include several (numbered) points that are briefly discussed. This reminded me of college textbooks and I found myself thinking "Do I need to remember this for the test?"

I am not Catholic and I was not aware before I received this book that it was written by a priest. I don't think that would have had any bearing on whether or not I'd have ordered this book as I wanted to know more about Mother Teresa, but I do think it sets the tone for how this book is written. The book, a theological study as well as a biographical account of much of Mother Teresa's life, has several discussions relating to and quotations from the Bible relating to 'thirst'; God's thirst.

I liked the guided meditation and the exerpt from the Varanasi Letter. Mother Teresa's words were eloquent...no wasted words and the message clear and gentle.

I take from this book a story of an amazing woman and her message: Only through love, only through compassion...will we find God. Which seems like it should be common sense for all humankind, but as we know...it's not.

I don't think there is any modern life that speaks such volumes about God's love as Mother Teresa's. Fr. Joseph Langford captures the essential truths of her life, spirituality, passions, theology, ministry, and tremendous influence. He is the founder with Mother Teresa of the order for priests within her Missionaries of Charity organization. In this book, he is conveying many of the truths and insights that she shared with him about her own spiritual journey and experiences.

It is amazing to me how a woman who seems so simple and is completely humble and unassuming possessed such revelatory insights about God. Mother Teresa's teachings are on par with any of the theologians I have studied in seminary. She is simple and very profound. Fr. Langford conveys the intimacy of her relationship with Jesus. It is this relationship that initiated her actions and informed her beliefs. What she did in her life, she did because she knew Jesus and saw Jesus in each of the people she ministered to throughout the world.

This is a perfect book to read amidst our chaotic and anxious times. It is an antidote for stress, consumerism and doubt. There simply exists no defense against the God of love and grace revealed through Mother Teresa's life. That love comes through in this book in no small part because of Fr. Langford's eloquent and sincere writing. You will learn from Mother Teresa of God's great love for you and his "thirst" for you revealed in Jesus Christ.

This book includes two "guided meditations." One on the words of Jesus upon the cross, "I thirst." The other is on the Samaritan Women at the well whom Jesus meets and offers the water of life. Fr. Langford also includes a chapter in which he expounds on the motiff of "thirst" throughout the Bible and how it reaches its climax in Christ upon the cross. The book includes many quotes of Mother Teresa.

For mature Christians, doubtful Christians, admirers of Mother Teresa, those wanting to believe and wanting to do good, this is a book for you. It is devotional and inspirational.

Who isn't inspired by the life of Mother Teresa? She was (and remains) an example to all of us. I would have rated the book with four stars, but my conscience would not allow it. Before anyone gives me a negative vote, please understand that I have the highest degree of respect and admiration for Mother Teresa. I do believe she is a saint. But I also think the book could have presented her life and spiritual journey in a more fluent and organized fashion.

This book is not a biography, but a collection of vignettes and quotes from her life, told by a dear friend and Mission of Charity priest in the Catholic church. Father Joseph Langford has separated the book into three sections which are labeled, Fire in the Night, Illumination, and Transformation. He speaks of her life, her work, and her life changing encounter with God throughout the book. I am deeply moved by her words and deeds, but I was also frustrated by a lack of linear progression in the book. I would have enjoyed more stories of her life, and a little less speculation about her inner thoughts.

Still, Father Langford is a good person to write of Mother Teresa, as he knew her and worked with her for many years. He expresses himself well, but perhaps the book would be more powerful with stronger editing.

Mother Teresa was born in present day Macedonia and joined the church as a young woman. She did not get her, "calling within a calling" to work with the poorest citizens of Calcutta until she was in her late 30's. She died in 1997 and was declared a saint almost immediately.

The book begins with the question, "Why Mother Teresa?" "...What was it in her that moved us so, and what was it in us that responded so readily. What hidden chords of soul was she touching? What was God touching in us, through her?" Later, we are told, "Mother Teresa's lessons will prepare us, as no political plan or economic program could, to live through out trials with grace, and to turn them into blessings for others."

A quote from the final chapter is,"Wherever we are, with whatever talents and relationships God has entrusted us, we are each called not to do what a Mother Teresa did, but to do as she did-to love as she loved in the Calcutta of our own life."

While I like reading books about saints and saintly people like Mother Teresa it is hard for me to translate the saint's message in my life because I am not a saint. This book shows how we can take the message Mother Teresa received from God and use it to change our own life and the lives of those around us.

In this book Father Joseph Langford, cofounder with Mother Teresa of her community of priests, the Missionaries of Charity Fathers, believes that each of us can use the God given gifts we have, and the love God has for us and wants from us, to bring love and caring to those around us. While some may be called to travel to far off lands most of us are in a unique position to help those in our lives, in a way that no one else can.

Fr. Langford states "We are all called and equipped by God not only to survive our personal Calcutta, but to serve there--to contribute to those around us...just as Mother Teresa did, if on a different scale. If she could face the worst of human suffering in such immense proportions--and do so despite bearing her own pain--then there must be a way that we can do the same in the lesser Calcutta that is ours."

He then explains that there are people in our lives that Mother Teresa could not touch.
"No one else on the planet, and no one else on history, possesses the same network of acquaintances and the same combination of talent and gifts as each of us does--as you do. As a result we don't have to travel to far-off lands or contribute to her missions to follow her example. He states "[W]e are called not do what a Mother Theresa did, but to do as she did--to love as she loved in the Calcutta of our own life" with the talents and relationships God has entrusted to us.

Father Langford does this by examining Mother Teresa's life, having us take part in three meditations and by his own personal understanding of how Mother Teresa's divine mandate to leave her convent and serve the poor in the slums can be translated into making our own world a better place.

Father Langford explains that Mother Teresa's divine mandate was that Jesus Christ thirsts for our love. Despite our rejection of Jesus He still comes to us and desires our love. As a result we are called to love others in our lives despite the rejection and pain we all face in our daily lives.

One of the things that strikes me when reading about Mother Teresa or reading things she wrote or said is that often her message was that feeding and clothing people was not enough---they needed to be told they were loved. This book confirms that message.

I could never hope to explain in this short summary Fr. Langford's full understanding of Mother Teresa's divine mandate and how it affects our lives. I do think this book will affect us each a bit differently.

This book is a unique and welcome addition to the literature about Mother Teresa. It adds much to understanding Mother Teresa and is unique in that it helps people see that they can be missionaries in their own homes. This book is a great treasure and highly recommended.

When I first started reading "Mother Teresa's Secret Fire", I was surprised to realize that it has been 11 years since Mother Teresa died. We still remember her like it was yesterday.

Although there have been many books written about Mother Teresa, this is one of a kind. Fr. Langford has written about the mystical grace-filled experience of God that Mother Teresa had in September 1946 on a train ride to Darjeeling, and how the grace of the train transformed her life.

This book was written at Mother's request so that others might understand how God had changed her life, and how our lives can be changed by doing His Will. We do not have to go to Calcutta to find suffering, it is all around us. Mother Teresa often reminded people of Jesus' words, "Whatsover you do to the least of our brothers and sisters, we do to Him".

The message that Mother Teresa received from Jesus is simply, "I thirst".Jesus thirsts for our love, our souls. He loves each and everyone of us with a love that is so great we cannot comprehend it. Mother Teresa writes, "Be Holy - Holiness is the easiest way to satiate Jesus' thirst - His for you, and yours for Him."

Fr. Langford reminds us that is never too late to change. Mother Teresa started working in the slums when she was nearly 40. She started a network of AIDS shelters at the age of seventy. Her life is proof that despite our limitations, nothing need prevent us from accepting the invitation of grace.

As I was reading this book I realized there was so much I wanted to remember that I would probably need to reread parts of it, and just a few pages later Fr. Langford suggested that very thing. This is a book to buy, keep, and pick up from time to time for a little refresher. If you haven't seen the movie, Mother Teresa, I highly recommend it. It is a great movie for the entire family!

Joseph Langford, a Catholic priest, must be applauded for his courage in presenting a message that is far more compatible with the perennial philosophy and the Gnostic gospels than it is with the teachings of the Catholic Church. Organized religions have their holy books, but as Aldous Huxley pointed out, ". . .the Ultimate Reality is not clearly and immediately apprehended, except by those who have made themselves loving, pure in heart and poor in spirit." Mother Teresa obviously reflected and extended pure love to all, but how can she be considered "poor in spirit?" Huxley defines the poor in spirit as those who are willing to set aside their personal preferences and preconceived belief systems and open themselves to direct instruction from God. Langford makes it clear that this is exactly what Mother Teresa did, and she was blessed with astonishing and far-reaching results.

Langford points out that Mother Teresa was reluctant to speak of her personal experience with the Divine. As he slowly reveals her message, it becomes clear that she decided to become the message, to live it, rather than allow it to be homogenized, diluted or drained of power. The God that Mother Teresa was willing to open her heart to "thirsts" for the opportunity to extend love to us, and "thirsts" to be loved by us. This review was written from bound galleys and uncorrected proofs, so the reader of the completed addition may not find their copy laid out in exactly the same way, but the chapters entitled, "A Legacy of Light: Part I and Part II," define the key facets of Divine thirst as Mother Teresa understood them. This information alone is worth the price of the book. Langdon skillfully ties Mother Teresa's experiential "knowing" to the writings of many other mystical saints whose writing have reached outside the boundaries of dogma.

The message Mother Teresa received clearly reveals a God who not only loves us, but is passionately "in love" with us, and whose love is unconditional and undivided in any way. This is not a God who demands that we purify ourselves before we approach Him, but welcomes us as a part of Himself. Langford explains that although Mother Theresa life became extraordinary because she lived this message, she was no different than any other person. This is a message meant for each and every one of us, and it can be a catalyst that allows us all to transcend the mundane existence of day to day life just as she did.

The book includes several useful appendices, including a series of quotes from other mystical saints and Mother Teresa herself, but it lacks an index. Langford's desire to inculcate Mother Teresa's message is understandable, but at times his heavy-handed, repetitive delivery can become tiresome. Most thoughtful readers do not need to be reminded so often that Mother Teresa was both a saint and a Nobel Prize winner. If the reader can look past Langford's overeager delivery to the glorious message he delivers, they will be rewarded. The message is pure love, the author delivers it with love, both for Mother Teresa and the reader, and the reader cannot help but benefit if they approach the material with an open heart. One does not need to be a Catholic, or even a Christian, to benefit from this message of unconditional love. I received this book through the Amazon Vine program. I have a lot of books about Mother Teresa, but this one is different from anything else I have. Most of my books give the biographical facts of Mother Teresa's life, or are accounts of the author's personal relationship with Mother Teresa. This book has both those elements too, but the main focus is on Mother Teresa's intense spiritual life, particularly what she called her "call within a call". Fr. Langford writes about Mother Teresa's experience of that call and of her reluctance to discuss it because it was actually an intense mystical experience of Jesus and His words on the cross, "I thirst."

The book not only delves deeply into Mother Teresa's prayer life but also invites the reader to experience God more personally. There are also some photographs of Mother Teresa that I had never seen before.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who has an interest in Mother Teresa or for anyone who wants to have a deeper relationship with God.
