Curran's book provides an excellent overview for those interested in the historical traditions and the major authors of American Catholic moral theology. I appreciated how he divided the book into two parts: history and topics. His evenhanded approach, where he cites both revisionist and traditionalist moral theology will be appreciated by all who want to look beyond the tensions between the two that has become a major part of the dialogue. I found especially useful his discussion of the importance of Humanae Vitae, Vatican II, and John Paul II on American scholarship of Catholic moral theology and his discussion of the fine contributions of American moral theologians; a topic sometimes overshadowed by European scholarship. This book is another example of the vast contribution of Charles Curran's intelligence and scholarship to Christian ethics.
