It's almost time for the gala groundbreaking for the Pickax bookstore--and the town of Brrr is preparing for its bicentennial celebration. All the festivities, however, are spoiled by the discovery of a man's body on James Qwilleran's property. Could it be the work of the killer who used the same methods in northern Michigan? To solve the case, Qwill and his feline pals, Koko and Yum Yum, will have to prick up their ears and determine who committed this foul deed.

I tried to read this once. I must've been distracted. I recently wrote a scathing review on this book. I am now reading it again. And her "style" IS there, in some ways. She still describes things nicely, the familiar "feel" is there. But it's NOT like Qwill to just fob off a murder on his own property in favor of preparing for The Great Storm of 1913 one-man show and the opening of the bookstore "The Treasure Chest". He doesn't seem that concerned, or even curious. At all. That's not the newsman/journalist Qwill we knew. As far as that, I think Ms Braun dropped the ball on that one.
As far as "coziness" it's there. It just doesn't have much to do with a "mystery". But as I read along, it isn't as bad as I thought it was the first time. Someone said her writing went down hill from "Cat Who Said 'Cheese' " onward. Cheese was one of her best in my opinion. Right there with Cat Who Wasn't There and Cat Who Moved a Mountain. (The only one I didn't care for was The Cat Who Lived High) So I give this 3 stars instead of one. I'm actually enjoying this, but for it's "cuddliness". That's part of why I am a Braun fan. Nice, clean, non-sexual, non-graphic and very little violence. The way I like my books. That's why I'm so mello. :) (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-29 08:41:17 EST)
