This is a great manual. I do typical weekend repairs to my car, I am no mechanic. With this book I can fix or replace just about anything I want to. I wish the book offered step by step illustrations for each repair I am making, but you can't pack it all in one book. Great buy for any car.

My daughter blew the engine in her 2001 Jetta 1.8T and this manual was invaluable in completing the engine replacement. Torque specs, exploded diagrams, wiring schematics, etc. There are few weaknesses. If you are making sure you have the correct bolt, sometimes the manual only lists it as "special bolt". That doesn't help. We found that more frequently than you'd think. I think the other thing Bentley could do better with this book is the index in the back of the book. Sometimes it's not easy to figure out which part you're looking at on the engine.

I've had this manual for a couple years now; it's very useful, mostly for figuring out where things are, and how they go together. I've had issues with incorrect torque specc/assembly instructions a couple times. Other than that, it's a very good GUIDE. Always double check what it says, and test fit things before hand!
I'm used to Suzuki manuals, which have excellent line drawings, and are very accurate. So this manual was somewhat of a let down, but still very useful as previously stated. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-27 06:15:25 EST)

I am a do it yourselfer and have done many repairs on Hondas & Acuras over the years. I was a little nervous working on a VW but this book made it easy.
I just finished putting new front/rear brakes on my Jetta. I have used Helm books in the past and always liked them. Unbelievably this may be a bit more detailed and easier to use. Torque specs are available at a glance and the pictures are clear with arrows provided to illustrate. I have no problem recommending this book, worth the $. Even though my Jetta is only 4 years old I neede a manual to be able to do simple work on her. This book is great and worth every penny we spent on it! It comes with the scamatics and everything. Much, much better than a Hanes Manual!!

I have the Bentley CD for my Audi, and this for my Jetta. The book is easier to use, and has the big advantage of being portable. The material is detailed enough to review and repair your vehicle, although parts-swapping/upgrading is a little above the scope of this book.

Authoratative resource. Pretty easy to find information that I've needed so far. Complete reference on systems management trouble codes. You will need a ODB-II scanner to get the trouble codes out though. Try your local auto parts store 1st though.

I had one to many issues with shady repair shops and got this book for my aging Wolfsburg 1.8T Jetta. The insight into the construction and service of my car has been priceless. You need to bring your own patience, methodical troubleshooting approach, and motivation if you get into the bigger stuff. Yet, whether you have someone else do the work or whether you do everything yourself this book provides invaluable insight. It will certainly pay for itself.

But then, it's about the only manual available. Personally, I think they cut corners simply because they have no real competition. This is the only useable manual for the MK IV cars.

This book is more for real auto mechanics. I'm just an average guy trying to do minor auto repairs. This book gets me to the subjects I'm looking for what I need to do, how I should do it and more, except the book doesn't tell me why for VW diesels?
Like changing the oil pan plug, the oil of choice or even the information about radiator and transmission fluids. Why? or When? I spent 2 hours at Pep-Boys trying to figure out why the after market fuel filter doesn't look right for the VW we now own. I'm paying a independent certified VW expert over $1,100.00 just to do some normal maintenance that should of been done by the previous owner's. I guess leased cars are not treated very well even though this lease was from a Volkswagen dealership an a fairly wild young girl (who might never see her 30s or ever become a lady)! This information came to my wife and I totally by accident and I'm sorry to say I think we maybe getting the remains of a wild girl. The book doesn't over look anything but I'm trying to understand the principles of diesels made for 2002 Volkswagen so I can use bio-diesels. I'm not saying this book is bad. In fact it is the most detailed book I ever seen for a can manual. I wish it was smaller and more devoted toward my 2002 turbo diesel "Jetta-TDI". The book is great for the mechanic doing all this work I cannot because I can't figure out this book! I guess I'll get more information of "why" at my old fashion library and re-sell this encyclopedia "Bugs, Jettas & Passats" for a mechanic who really can use this book better than me! This is yet again another great manual from Bentley Publishers. The details for the repairs I have had to do on my Volkswagen are nicely illustrated in this manual, with clear step-by-step directions. I have used service manuals from other publishers, and by far Bentley surpasses my expectations where the other publishers left me disappointed.

As someone who is not a mechanic and also new to the German VW design, I think this manual is good. It has electrical diagrams, info for body work, many mechanical diagrams and other stuff. It is as big as a nursing college textbook! I am going to invest in a VAGCOM because VW cars are computer driven I really have no choice. I would recommend this book to any VW do it yourselfer especially the diesel guys.

This Bentley repair manual is actually very, very good. It's a massive book with loads of useful information about the Jetta. It is so much better than what I had (which was the web). It is better than the typical Chilton or Hayes manuals, which I've owned a dozen of over the years.
I'm fairly mechanically inclined. I change the fluids and do all the routine maintenance myself. I had even changed the timing belt twice before getting the manual. When I go looking to a manual, I'm looking for details that can't be readily observed by a somewhat competent shade tree mechanic/driving enthusiast. When I bought the manual, I was repairing a couple electrical issues on my TDI Jetta (bad fan control module and failed fan) and despite having a decent electrical diagram, it did not have enough information to actually diagnose the exact problem. I got further information from the Bentley support forums (yeah, the guys that write the book support the purchasers of it!) and learned that the electronic version has the additional information I was needing. Specifically, pinouts of components along with methods for testing individual components (such as, apply 12v here, jumper pins 2 and 3, and X should happen. If not, Y is defective). This book has some of that, but not enough. Having that information is the difference between knowing for certain if buying a particular non-returnable electrical component will actually fix the problem. The book is great. It's a bible to say the least. It shows everything in detail, and is recomended for the do-it-yourself person. If it doesn't show how to do something in general, it will show you what everything is and what torque you need when tightening bolts (very important) There is a lot of aluminum parts(oil pan) that can strip out. I recomend any bentley manual for any vehicle.

If, like me you can maintain your own car, this manual is indispensible. With clear diagrams, pictures and instructions it is hard to fault the content. It even covers the R32 should you be lucky enough to own one! I live in the UK and I have a Golf V6 4 Motion which our Haynes manuals do not cover, this manual fills the gap.

First of all, I have used both, but this manual is significantly more in depth than the Chilton's guide for these models, especially in the electrical and body schematics. It's definitely worth the extra bucks for the breadth of expert advice and will most likely keep good resale value long after the car is gone.
1999 to 2005 were great years for the VW hybrid engine. I'm not talking about gas/electric, but gas/oil: the amazing (and unexplained) ability of the VW engine to burn through copious amounts of oil (but still getting decent gas mileage). I can honestly say that this is the manual I recommended to all of my Volkswagen owning friends. All of them. Surprisingly all of them bought it. Not only does this manual help me fix problems that are serious to moderate to just plain weird it helps me learn alot about my car as well. It helped me learn the things I need to get my car "Bella" the Volkswagen in a better shape. I recently had to change my water pump and I was going to take it to the mechanic which cost me alot of money, and instead of taking it to the mechanic I used the simple knowlege and the manual and I changed my water pump. Yes it has that too.
By learning and reading the manual everytime I need to use it I am able to fix other cars as well that are Volkswagens. This knowledge that I gain from this great manual will stick with me forever. I am very satisfied with it. I am very thankful that I bought it and alot of my other friends that own the manual are thankful as well. This manual covers most repairs but I was a little disappointed with it. I got the CD Factory repair manual which is much more detailed in diagnosis and repair procedures. Also, one big drawback of this book is it does not have Component Location section - the CD does.

Good general help, Very good wiring diagrams (but hard to follow, sometimes). OK for general mechanical issues. Better than nothing, but may or not save you the cost of the book. Unfortunately you will still end up at a dealer or a service center with a computer scanner that can get into you system, just a OBD-II code reader will not be enough for some of the more difficult problems like Secondary Air, Mass Air Flow, ABS etc.

This is a fantastic tomb of information, if it an't in here then you probably don't want to know. Because this manual covers many motor/models etc its got more info than a specific user would want but I've never complained about too much info. I've purchased Bentley manuals for every car I've owned and this would be the best manual yet.

I would say that this book is a great reference to use while working on your VW. It can take a little getting used to the chapter layout at first, but once you get the hang of that, it's easy to navigate. So far, I have been able to find everything I have needed to make it possible to do work on my VW with very little trouble and highly recommend this book. When it comes to VW's, you will not find a better provider of information then Bentley and that's a fact!
