I enjoyed this book. The author seemed to have a more scientific background than some of the other books I read on this. The reasoning behind WHY we make certain movements was interesting, and the fact that he worked for the FBI makes me more inclined to use his analysis. Fun to read as well.

Excellent book. Could be very helpful if you are in a situation where you need to know if the people you are dealing with are honest.

I loved how well the book explained the connections between body language and limbic system responses, linking most body language cues to a set of freeze, flight, or fight responses. By describing the psychological reasoning behind each of these responses, the information in the book was much easier for me to remember and more adaptable to real life situations because I could apply universal concepts rather than trying to memorize every single body language cue like a dictionary.
Excellent book. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-20 03:16:05 EST)

This book can not only help you to be more aware of when to probe further about whether what someone says is inconsistent with what they may be feeling, but it also can help you be more aware of the messages you may be sending by your gestures, posture, etc. One of the things I like most about this book is that the author sets the expectation that you won't be able to know the "truth" based only on body language but that awareness of body language will help you to understand when you should be paying attention to other details of your interaction with someone. Anyone who works with people, especially in a customer-facing role, would benefit from reading this book.

This book will definitely improve your performance if your job involves dealing with people. Gestures, expressions, posture and body language originate in the limbic system of your brain, responsible for emotions, and very hard to influence by the conscious brain. They are more accurate expression of thoughts and feelings; and learning to recognize those non-verbal cues is an essential requirement for reading people, which Mr. Navarro did as an FBI agent.
Obviously the best way to learn non-verbal body language is to work with a master like Mr. Navarro, which most people cannot. Next best would be a video. I have Paul Ekman's video CD on reading facial microexpressions and that is lot more useful. Mr. Navarro really should have produced a video CD/DVD like that. This book has a lot of pictures of Mr. Navarro and his assistant demonstrating those facial expressions, gestures and postures, but they cannot demonstrate like a video, which is definitely worth more than thousand words describing the gestures. Therefore, I hope that Mr. Navarro comes out with a video version of this book. The book is well written in simple easily understandable language with a fair number of pictures illustrating the body language that is being described. To read this book is not going to make you an expert... or turn you into James Bond, but it does represent the opportunity to learn from a former Counter-Intelligence Agent, and student of human behavior that truly has few peers. Much to my chagrin, Mr. Navarro's work has become extremely popular in MY business, and in my view has made a paradigm shift in the level of talent that I face in my work. Yet, surprisingly, somehow I do not hold it against him. I have had approximately 10 hours of instruction from Former Special Agent Navarro at FAR greater expense than this book, and found that expenditure absolutely one of the best investments I have ever made. Find out how much YOU have been missing in dozens of situations every single day. To make a corny Star Wars reference,(and Joe is a corny guy himself to be sure)the book is very like the first step into a larger world. I know you will enjoy the first steps of being shown how much influence and perceptiveness you own!

This book is everything that I thought it would be. Reading body language is an artform and this brings you a little closer to understanding what it's all about.

Tremendously valuable information for public speakers (know when the audience is bored), interviewers, sales people, organizational change agents, and those of you who just plain want to know when you may be being lied to, or causing distress in the other person. Well written, to the point. Also, just a little bit fun.

I recently bought this book hoping to learn how to read and better understand the behavior of the business people and situations I come across daily in my work in finance. My hopes for this knowledge were SURPASSED as the guidance Mr. Navarro provides in this book is so practical and constructive you can start applying it immediately. I like his style of writing too - easy to follow, engaging with many real examples. I also found the pictures used throughout the book are very helpful in making a behavior memorable so I can look out for it as I go about my day, in and outside of work. I can see how this information could be applied to so many different jobs and situations, not just business and finance, and as such recommend it to anyone looking for more understanding about the behaviors of the people around them.
I'd give it more than 5 stars if I could, because it's already helping me as I apply what I've learnt. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-10 19:34:01 EST)
