A Personal Finance Classic that Changed Forever How We Think, Feel, and Act about Money

Ten years ago, Suze Orman, America’s most celebrated finance expert, transformed the way we all view personal finance with her groundbreaking The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom. This New York Times bestselling blockbuster broke from the ranks of traditional money management books by looking at finances from an entirely new perspective, advising people to approach money from an emotional standpoint in order to achieve their financial dreams. By emphasizing the psychological and spiritual power money has in our lives, while still including information on all aspects of our financial daily activities, Orman has helped millions break through the barriers that hold them back. She is now our country’s leading personal finance expert, and here is the book that started it all.

Orman is back in a brand-new, fully updated edition to The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom, her personal finance classic that offers thoughtful, easy-to-follow steps toward a life of financial freedom. Here is the most up-to-the-minute information on a wide range of financial topics that plague us today: credit card debt, bankruptcy, paying for education, wills versus trusts, the best retirement account, life insurance, and more. Combining real-life recommendations with Suze’s own brand of inspiration and motivation, this is the only guide you’ll need to provide for yourself and your family.

As Orman shows, managing money is so much more than a matter of balancing your checkbook or picking the right investments. It’s about redefining financial freedom and realizing that you are worth far more than your money. Let America’s leading personal finance expert show you how.
When Suze Orman was 13 she watched her father dive into the flames of his burning take-out chicken shack in order to rescue his cash register. In that moment Orman learned that money was more important than life itself. And so it became her quest to be rich. But years later, when Orman became a wealthy broker with a huge investment firm, she was profoundly unhappy. What went wrong? She had not yet achieved financial freedom. In her nine-step program, Orman covers the ingredients to financial success--confronting our beliefs and fears, learning the nuts and bolts (and insiders secrets!) of savvy management, and finding the spiritual trust that leads to abundance.
Her down-to-earth personality and accessible message has connected Orman with TV viewers on CNN, CNBC, and Fox After Breakfast. Now she makes her unique approach to controlling money available to readers with this non-traditional financial planning guide.

The book has some very valuable information for everyone. From beginning to save with a 401K or any savings plan, to Wills and other necessary documents one should and must have drawn up, its very informative. Suze refers to situations in her experience which can show us why we do or do not prepare for retirement as we should and how emotions from the past cause us to deal with money. I recommend this book for everyone to read.

This book is very helpful. I am a 'new' investor, due to Suze Orman, and this book is essential for me to 'look up' questions I have. Lots of information all in the same interesting style in which she speaks.

Easy read with very little technical gargon, she defines things well.
Suze brings the "high finance" down to earth and inspires and motivates. I have used all of her 9 Steps and they are truely steps up the financial staircase. She takes the fear out of finance.

You'll want to give this to your friends.
Suze is great. She helps take care of everything, not just budgets. This one was the best of the money books I've read; it left me with more money and more peace of mind. This is the only one I've given away to a friend, and I'm buying it again for myself.

Does Orman know her stuff? Definitely. Is this book concise, well written and to the point, a no nonsense primer on achieving financial stability? Yes it is. Does Orman pander to the lowest common denominator, i.e. those with virtually no financial acumen? In my opinion, yes she does.

I recently read an interview with Orman in the Wall street Journal where she claimed that of her $25 million in net worth she only has a million in the stock market. That's 4%. Most financial experts would assert that's way too little. But Orman's not an investor, she's a common sense lady with a brass tacks approach to money, and it serves her well.

And I just read a book I like even better than Suze. Dave Barry's "Money Secrets" contains a dead on skewering of Orman. If you're familiar with Orman's approach and like Barry, you have to check this out.

I bought this book mostly to review and compare our financial decision making process.
We liked the clearly explained concepts and suggestions in this book so much that I've just ordered four additional copies to give to our son, nieces and nephew (young adults).
I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to have a reference and update financial family affairs.

The third edition was released in 2006, so the information is fresh and current.

I can't say enough good about this book. Suze gives EXCELLENT guidance, coupled with sensitive insight into how we all differ in our approach to handling money. She explores everything from the basics of getting out of debt, to learning how to invest your money and grow it - in a very intelligent, yet readable fashion.

I recommend grabbing a little note pad while reading, so you've got a place to jot notes and reminders to yourself for follow-up in your own life. I made a page for each topic that applied to me, then put bullet-point notes under each heading. For example, some of my page headings would be: Wills/Trusts, Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare, Term Life Insurance, Long-term Care Insurance, Long-term Disability Insurance, Credit & Debt Management, Investments-Mutual Funds & ETF's, Investments-T Bills, Money Market Accounts.

Though this doesn't detract from the value of the content, I would like to see one improvement in this book: a better (more extensive) index that cross-references the 'small' sub-headings. For example, under insurance needs, it would be nice to be able to look up 'auto insurance' in the index and go to the area that gives you 'rule of thumb' for what a good policy should cover.

Overall, I like this book so much, it will be the "Birthday Gift" book I give to all my family members this year! We ALL need guidance in different ways - this book helps provide that in a very easy-to-grasp way. EXCELLENT read! EXCELLENT information! Keep up the GREAT work, Suze!
