The bestselling success book of all time is updated and revised with contemporary ideas and examples.
Think and Grow Rich has been called the "Granddaddy of All Motivational Literature." It was the first book to boldly ask, "What makes a winner?" The man who asked and listened for the answer, Napoleon Hill, is now counted in the top ranks of the world's winners himself. The most famous of all teachers of success spent "a fortune and the better part of a lifetime of effort" to produce the "Law of Success" philosophy that forms the basis of his books and that is so powerfully summarized in this one. In the original Think and Grow Rich, published in 1937, Hill draws on stories of Andrew Carnegie, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and other millionaires of his generation to illustrate his principles. In the updated version, Arthur R. Pell, Ph.D., a nationally known author, lecturer, and consultant in human resources management and an expert in applying Hill's thought, deftly interweaves anecdotes of how contemporary millionaires and billionaires, such as Bill Gates, Mary Kay Ash, Dave Thomas, and Sir John Templeton, achieved their wealth. Outmoded or arcane terminology and examples are faithfully refreshed to preclude any stumbling blocks to a new generation of readers. |

While the book's concept intrigued me, it also lost me when Hill started talking about the "ether fields" and telepathy. No amount of "magical thinking" can make someone rich--the best sections of the book are the ones that talk about setting and meeting goals. Even when Hill wrote the book in 1937, pseudo-science such as telepathy had already been debunked. The 21st century updates add new stories but fail to address Hill's unscientific notions of "ether fields."

No doubt before The Secret ...before the books on The Law of Attraction...there was Napoleon Hill in 1937. I have read this book 3 times and it is the book of books in helping you transform your life by seeing your purpose, developing faith anf belief and then getting out of your own way. He may use different words but its all about asking, believing and then receiving to get all you want. Combine this with a fabulous workbook I discovered :Living The Secret Everyday: My Secret Workbookthat guides you thru all his principles and you can't lose. These books have truly transformed my life!

The basics of success haven't changed in at least eighty years, as this book clearly demonstrates. The subject is acquiring wealth but the lessons can be applied to the achievement of any goal in life.
Young man, young woman, or senior citizen, if you have a "burning desire" for an accomplishment, the path is clearly mapped in this small, easy to read book - but you must follow the instructions and study it like the most important course of your education- it probably is. This review is is relation to the condition of the actual book.
Very poor quality copy of the book. The pages are all unequal and jaggered. It is practically falling apart at the seams. Suggest NOT buying this book (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-06 01:02:03 EST)

I read this book, the original, I studied it in 1970, and it changed my life! I learned to know what I want in life and take charge of it while being a caring person for all around me. It is also about getting along with people. I did not use it for financial goals but rather for personal-achieving goals; and it worked! It's very detailed and structured so it helped me step through the process for the rest of my life. It is not vague at all.Think and Grow Rich: The Landmark Bestseller--Now Revised and Updated for the 21st Century

The book title tells that it is about making money getting rich. that's true it covers a lot of topics on making money. But it reveals far more than how to get rich. That's why it becomes a great classic.
This book teaches practical ways to success in all aspects of life. Through this book you can find many timeless wisdom and useful tips on how to train your mind toward success. Beyond making money, detailed tips can be found on how to start business, get a job, succeed in career, gain leadership skills, improve relationships, manage people/assets, stay healthy, etc. It is one of a few books worth reading over and over. I also got the MP3 audio book to play on my half-hour commute. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-01 01:01:07 EST)

"Think and Grow Rich", as is "The Law of Success" by Napoleon Hill, are the grandfather of all self-help books. No other self-help book contains the depth and wealth of information "Think and Grow Rich" and "The Law of Success" contain. If you buy "Think and Grow Rich" you should also buy How to Win Friends and Influence People. These two books together will give you all the life tools you need to truly be successful.

Probably my favorite self-help book of all time. Such valuable information
...no doubt 'if you think you can, you can.' The power of our minds is incredible and this book clearly explains it. But it is Living The Secret Everyday: My Secret Workbook that is the practical and 'doing' version of its important principles. It has been life-changing for me as it keeps my focused on what I want and on track. Don't read one without the other. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-19 00:24:15 EST)

This is a book that is worth reading over and over. I bought it as a gift for my future husband and it has opened his eyes to a whole new way of pursuing success. It came in perfect condition, although the pages were not even! It was like brand new but cheaply made. Very happy with it overall. The content is more important than the cover, right?

So far this is the best book I have read on building wealth, though it's not only about building wealth, I belive this book to be one that teaches you and dares you to think outside the "rut" you are in.
Its the MOST realistic book or we can say it is the one the goes most in depth. Nothing good in life comes easy, there is much work to be done to attain it, and this book provides a solid (in my eyes) base for those who want the best out of life. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-04-05 17:12:39 EST)

This books is simply amazing and I really wish I'd read it much sooner. It contains the core elements of goal setting and achievement. If you have read other books in the field of self-improvement you are sure to see similar philosophies here, but I can't think of any other book that captures everything as well as this does. I'd be interested to know if it's as easy to accept what the book is saying from someone who hasn't read a lot of other similar books.
Personally I felt very energized as well as enlightened when reading. I wish this book was required reading at all schools. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-19 08:25:11 EST)

After finishing "Think and Grow Rich" I have suddenly realized that this simple slogan is the single way of life in a capitalist society. In this book, as the only way of getting rich, the author advocates goal-directed way of life, purposefulness, constant self-perfection, courage, the skill to think and to act, and the other similar traits of character.
Many people came to a conclusion that the wealth, in some extent, depends on a level of education, motivation, self-esteem, and so on. The problem is that not all the people in equal extend incline to the education, to their self-improvement. This is because of the differences of their needs, habits, abilities, capabilities, and so on. Leo Tolstoy in his novel "Resurrection" arose a question of how to improve the level of education within a society: from inside of each individual or from outside? Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Should first the level of education of each and every individual be risen which yields a revolution (dialectic transition of quantity into quality) or the revolution should make the environment to foster the education of every individual? The traits advocated by Napoleon Hill correspond to the first Leo Tolstoy's way of improving society. If each and every individual will improve, the society will automatically improve. The second way of Leo Tolstoy (create the environment which will foster the education of every individual) is contrary to Napoleon Hill's ideas: "if something is got for free or without big effort, it won't be appreciated, won't be handled with care or you won't trust it". Free education and medical care won't be respected properly by people, regardless how good this education and medical care are. That's why the socialist society will develop slower than capitalist. Marxists knew this and have built the concept of World revolution (to overthrow of capitalism in all countries), and a further idea by Trotsky that it was impossible to build socialism in a single country. Trotsky wrote that the socialist economy is not as efficient as capitalist and without the World revolution the USSR won't be able to overcome its economic underperformance. Napoleon Hill praises the freedom and opportunities of the capitalist society of the U.S. in particular, which gives, according to Napoleon Hill, boundless opportunities for an individual who is able to think and grow rich. I also recommend "The Road to Serfdom" by F. A. Hayek in addition to this book. Although "Think and Grow Rich" is a classical self-help book for a general reader while "The Road to Serfdom" is mostly academic, I think that both of them should be read. If you asked me to recommend to you the single best book I have ever read, my answer would be a very definite "Think and Grow Rich".
First published in 1937, this is the end product of two decades of research conducted by Napoleon Hill. His research started when Andrew Carnegie (the steel tycoon who was then the richest man on earth) gave him the assignment of organizing a Philosophy of Personal Achievement. Hill, who was a poor journalist, armed with just an introductory letter from Carnegie, set out to interview over five hundred successful people including Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, John D. Rockefeller, George Eastman, William Wrigley Jr. and Charles M. Schwab. Hill then revealed the priceless wisdom of his research in the form of the thirteen steps to success (in Think and Grow Rich) and the seventeen principles of success (in courses and lectures he conducted). The concepts taught by Napoleon Hill transformed my life. Some of these include developing a definite purpose, building a Positive Mental Attitude (PMA), channeling the power of the sub-conscious mind and dealing with adversity. Everything he wrote about or talked about is thought provoking. He was wise, humble and funny. His philosophy is universal; he did not mix it with religion. The riches he referred to were more than money, for the Philosophy of Personal Achievement can be applied to anything in life. Hill was well ahead of his time. This book has a chapter dedicated to some of today's most important issues - Specialized Knowledge, Decision Making, Imagination and Organized Planning (in which he deals with Leadership). He also has principles for Teamwork, Creative Vision, Health, etc. This is a classic, and hence the examples are old (not to be confused with outdated). But they are as relevant today as they were in the early twentieth century. Here is an example from T&GR in the chapter on Desire: On the morning after the Great Fire of Chicago (1871), a group of merchants on Chicago's State Street went into a conference to decide whether to rebuild their stores or leave Chicago. All but one decided to leave. The merchant who decided to stay pointed a finger to the remains of his store and said "Gentlemen, on that very spot I will build the world's greatest store, no matter how many times it may burn down." His name was Marshall Field and his store still exists, and in Hill's words is "a towering monument to that state of mind known as a burning desire." I lived in Chicago from 2002 through 2004 and worked three blocks away from this impressive store on State Street. Sometimes I would visit it or stand outside it to derive inspiration and be reminded of the power of desire. It is amazing that Hill describes "burning desire" with a story based on the Chicago Fire. There are thousands of self-help books out in the market and hundreds of self proclaimed "gurus" who have made a living by copying the wisdom in Hill's books. As I went through some of those books I realized that there was not much in them that Hill had not already written about. I recommend quality over quantity. Instead of reading through many books, I recommend that you study the following works of Hill and internalize his wisdom: 1. The Think and Grow Rich Action Pack (1937) - I recommend the Action Pack edition, 2. Napoleon Hill's Keys to Success: The 17 Principles of Personal Achievement - this is an excellent guide to his principles, 3. Your Right To Be Rich [Unabridged] - this consists of 12 hours of live lectures covering the 17 principles, that Hill conducted in Chicago in 1954. By internalizing, I mean studying in depth - analyzing the ideas, making notes and summaries. I own more CDs by Hill, but I believe that these 3 items make the perfect study plan on the Philosophy of Personal Achievement. I am greatly indebted to Napoleon Hill. The purpose of my writing this is to spread awareness of his work so that more people can benefit from it. This, I believe is the best way in which Hill would have liked to have been repaid. This review was written for the original version, which is the core of this version. This revised edition has more recent examples. If my review was helpful to you, I request you to select "Yes" so that the rating is improved and more readers will get to read it. Please also see the website of the Napoleon Hill Foundation, naphill dot org, which has helpful resources. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-22 23:03:51 EST)

An idea is only the beginnning of richness! The power of thought is indeed thought provoking. Reinforces how simple life is and how unecessarily we complicate it. Reading this book and applying the messages should bring out the great in each of us.

This is unquestionably one of the very best books on the subject. To get the most from this book you must have a mind capable of refined discernment. Rather than handing you answers on a silver platter, Mr. Hill makes you "Think" about the principles revealed such that you will come to understand and internalize them on your own terms.
The messages are extremely powerful, if veiled, and their strict application MUST invariably lead you towards the fulfillment of whatever aims you focus its philosophy towards. In the spirit of full disclosure, I should say that I am a speaker, trainer, and author of another unique and valuable learning tool that can also be found here on Amazon: The WealthLoop Series Beginner's Guide to Personal Wealth Creation (Combo Audio/Data CD): Audio Seminar With Downloadable 40-Page Action Manual and Active Link Library. Unlike "Think and Grow Rich," this program is a very straight-forward discussion of the art and science of personal wealth creation. This book has timeless appeal. Some of the terminology is dated, but the steps to riches (or the achievement of any other goal) are as relevant today as when Napoleon Hill wrote the book.
I like that he combines detailed instructions with more general wisdom that can be applied to any situation. For instance, he provides a very specific 6-step plan for turning your desire for riches into reality. But he also provides deeper knowledge, like saying, "When one is truly ready for a thing, it puts in its appearance." This is a book to be read again and again for a reminder that our lives are a result of the thoughts we think. Kara Lane, author of Wake Up to Powerful Living: 12 Principles to Transform Your Life! I read this book as a follow up to The Secret. Napoleon Hill was way ahead of his time - the book is a bit quaint - written in a different era - however, the concepts are very timely and thought provoking. I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the Law of Attraction as it applies to business success.

F@#$ken great book. Gets a bit fairy with the talk in a few places but if you can translate it(Certain sections) into a more informal yet defined read(experience) then it will be well received.
Definitely gives, without a doubt, the first tool required in acquiring wealth. Read the book to know what that tool is. I cant emphasizes this enough. I believe all books that teach are tools(and there are some amazing tools out there) but place Think and grow rich as the first in the tool box. Then fill the mind(toolbox) with others. Especially if you want to increase your wealth. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-29 01:59:39 EST)

I must admit I was hesitant to read this book, as I've seen it touted in the get-rich-quick environment. Not being a shallow, possession motivated type, I seek things of greater meaning. Once I got past the stigma, I learned it is well worth the effort.
This is more than just a book about acquiring wealth, it is a treatise on the human condition, the human psyche. It is truly a book about becoming "rich" not simply about acquisition. The principles can be applied to anything your heart desires. True, these principles appear in many many forms from other authors, other arenas, but they are phrased very clearly and orderly here. The author's writing style is conversational, so it makes the book an easy read. There are lots of parables enumerating the principles and how they are lived. If you just want the meat, you can skip the stories over and cover the book quite quickly. There are some very fundamental concepts approached here, like you have to be motivated with desire to achieve something. Learning this about yourself, what you are truly motivated for, is invaluable. Do the work in the book and you will get a lot out of it. The author teaches you how to manage self-motivation. His advice is exceptional, there are nuggets of wisdom scattered throughout the book. One that I felt sums things up well is "If you must be careless with your possessions, let it be in connection with material things. Your mind is your spiritual estate!" If you are getting this book because it's plugged a million times by everyone involved in 'The Secret' DON'T DO IT. I did and I pushed myself through the first 2 chapters and eventually gave up. It's boring and honestly it sounds like a bunch of BS. If you understand 'The Secret' than you don't need anything else. My advise would be to work on applying the 'rules' of 'The Secret' to your daily life and be happy at everything you do. Peace & Love

During my early prime-time adulthood, being wrapped in the Ayn Rand critique of impure reason, I dissed any popular ideas that promised riches and happiness through positive thinking, motivational savvy, or winning friends and influencing people.
Such exercises seemed far beneath my heroic noodling out of all the important, planet-saving concepts with my engineering brilliance, then riding off into the smog-filled sunset with the Dagny Taggart of my dreams. How times have changed, how we've all changed. This inspirational classic by Napoleon Hill is still as pertinent to success as when it was written, during the depths of The Great Depression (1937). But Hill does not concern himself with government fiscal policy. He understands the prime mover in the equation of prosperity, not to mention survival, is how we think of ourselves. Hence the title Think and Grow.... I'm reminded of a wall hanging showing a kitten looking into a mirror in which a large, full-maned lion stares back. The caption reads, "What matters is how we see ourselves." Hill's method is to study the mental habits and qualities of several well-known Americans who had been successful in business, men such as Andrew Carnegie and Henry Ford. What they held in common was the unyielding image of success. Further they had mastered the process of placing that image of success in their subconscious minds. So, there was simply no question they would achieve what they imagined, what they "thought." Then Hill provides techniques for building that image. But there's more to it than that. Successful people also are found to have the following characteristics: * A deep, burning desire for what their actions will yeld * A definiteness of purpose, set in writing * Written goals and a written plan to achieve them * Victory over cravings, anxieties, and any character issues Hill demonstrates a number of practical techniques for addressing each of the above areas. He further elaborates on the quality of creative imagination, which fuels the inventive or wealth-generative process. Successful people--in those days, they were practically all men--have this quality. ... and writing out a 1-2 page plan/vision of what you want your life to be, as directed early in the book. I balked immediately when asked to write out a 1-2 page plan--I just wanted to read the book and get rich without doing anything else. But I did spend 15 minutes writing out what I want for my life, and in six months I've seen things take shape without my doing anything. Wow! Napoleon Hill writes a lot about the power of the "unconscious mind" and our ability to train our unconscious mind. One way of training the unconscious is to read your 1-2 page plan every morning and every night. I have not been so disciplined but it's still working. Opportunities are coming to me that I could not have anticipated. Or maybe I'm just seeing opportunities that were always there. It's a completely different way of looking at success and getting what you want out of life. Very similar to the dvd called "The Secret" that has gained notoriety of late (www.thesecret.tv). This guy was way ahead of his time. He wrote the book at the behest of Andrew Carnegie, a steel magnate and the richest man of the time (1938), who wanted to figure out the commonalities of the most successful people of the era. This book is the result of hundreds of interviews that Hill conducted with the world's most successful and richest people.
P.S. I have no affilitiation with "The Secret," except that I found it fascinating as well--and it's a video so it's another way to digest similar material. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-02 03:15:02 EST)

This book was given to me as a gift while I was in college. Immediately, the words within it resonated as true and started helping establish my true identity. It pointed me in the direction that I needed to go, and provided me the tools to get there.
Of course, not everyone is ready for this book, but I think that all should give it a try. This book is based is the research of the world's most successful people, and subtly speaks to the immutable laws of the universe -- and how we can control them. "Whatever the mind can conceive, it can achieve it."
This quote, just as the book itself, has become a classic in our everyday language. 'Think and Grow Rich' is about dedication to living up to your true potential. Napoleon Hill talks about the importance of cultivating a burning desire to achieve, faith in yourself, using autosuggestion, and uncompromising persistence to overcome fears and obstacles along the way. He offers a methodical view, with great examples, of strategies necessary to live a rewarding life. It is a book worth reading twice, and I would highly recommend it. This book was great to begin with! But now, with its updated examples and millionaires, fans will love this classic all over again. This is also a great book for new-comers! I have been wanting to read the original for years, but didn't want to have to put up with stories of millionaires of the 1920's. This new updated revised edition uses examples and stories from millionaires of today. you gotta read this!

For the most part, I enjoyed reading this new version of Think and Grow Rich. But it was a little disconcerting to be reading along here and there in a book written during the Great Depression and suddenly come across material about people like Bill Gates, Stephen Speilberg, Ray Kroc, Arnold Schartzenegger, Andy Grove, etc., etc. The information is nice, but I would just as soon have seen Dr. Pell write a separate, new book containing all this other information. It tends to get in the way of what Hill is saying. I have three or four other copies of Think and I compared them with this one. I notice that Pell has cut out a good bit of material from the original and that some material has beeen shifted around. It did not bother me especially, but I am not sure it was a good idea. If you collect Hill books like I do, you'll probably want to get this one, but there are better ones out there. Also, this must be a British book because a lot of the word spellings are not in American English.
