WSJ Guide to Money is a great book but it is out of print. That is why the cost has gone through the roof but there is a great alternative. The Standard and Poors Guide to Money is by the same authors and is even a year more current. Take a look at the cover you can even see that it is the same book and that all that was done is change "WSJ" in the title to "Standard and Poors",same book by the same author. The only difference is that is is in print so the price is reasonable. Here is a link to the Standard and Poors book that is by the same authors and is even more current: Standard and Poor's Guide to Money and Investing (Standard & Poor) (Note: I gave the book 3 stars because it is out of print and to expensive. For the cover price of roughly fifteen bucks the book is five stars. For the thirty to one hundred the price jumps to I only give it three stars. Get the Standard and Poors book and make your first investment by saving some money.)

Although this isn't the largest book in the world, I really enjoyed reading it. I thought that I was pretty savvy as far as the way things worked, but this book definitely enlightened me. I also appreciated the pictures that made things clearer.

If you're a beginner, interested in investing, this is a very decent primer to start with. Buy it with Eric Tyson's Investing for Dummies, and you'll be fully set!

A nice introduction to wall street if you were raised on Mars. For people who want to do investing for a living this is a waste of time

I think this book did a great job in helping me understand the universe of money and investing beyong the scope of stock. I have been trading for 1 year and wanted to buy a small book that gave me a general education on the subject. Although much more can be written on each topic covered it is good for beginning to understand the whole picture.

Most of the book is a great intro to money, stocks, bonds and mutual funds. But the last section, on Futures & Options, seems really rushed and lacks the clarity of the earlier sections (especially the material on options). For example, the authors do not define "calling" or "putting" options; and there is a blatant error on page 150 wherein a description of an option table is laughably out of sync with the table it is trying to describe.

Overall, the book is very good -- just beware of the shortcomings of its last section.

(Hide Review...)  Consider the S&P Guide to Money and Investing
Reviewer Permalink
The authors of the Wall Street Journal Guide to Money and Investing also wrote a book called Standard and Poor's Guide to Money and Investing. The S&P book is newer, by the same author, and is cheaper than the Wall Street Journal Guide. When you look at the pictures of both guides you can see they are the same book except one is called "The Wall Street Journal Guide to Money and Investing" and the other is "The Standard and Poor's Guide to Money and Investing". (They both have the same author)Because the S&P version is still in print you can buy directly from Amazon and it is much cheaper.

The authors of the WSJ Guide to Money and Investing have also written the same book for Standard and Poor's. The book is called the Standard and Poor's Guide to Money and Investing and seems to be the identical book to the WSJ book except that it was put out for Standard and Poor's instead of the WSJ. The Standard and Poor's version also has two major advantages in that it is cheaper and still in print so you can buy directly from Amazon and it is also printed after the WSJ copy and has more updated information. And as I noted before it is by the same authors as the WSJ book. This is why I gave the WSJ only 3 stars.

I found this book to be very informative.

Another review mentioned that the copy they had duplicated some pages and was missing some pages. I think that this was probably a single messed up copy. I don't think the whole print run was bad because I have the exact edition and ISBN of the book that Amazon lists and all the pages are there.

I use this for teaching undergraduate students Financial Economics. It is a handy reference for them, the charts from the Wall Street Journal are easy to read and are clearly explained. The book is for the lay person who wants to know how to read a bond table or how to understand the stock reports. Value for money this is a great buy!

(Hide Review...)  Great, Easy-To-Understand Reference Guide!
Reviewer Permalink
This is a great, concise understanding of money, types of investments, types of mutual funds, the federal reserve system, etc. I wish the Wall Street Journal put out something like this on micro and macroeconomics. I have to say, they makes things simple, concise, and easy to understand. No academic would write this-- as you would expect from the WSJ, this is excellent and a product of good free enterprise... this is like having the substantive part of ten textbooks in a easy-to-read reference guide...

(Hide Review...)  Beware - 3rd Edition may be a defective book
Reviewer Permalink
Just purchased this 3rd edition book and was disappointed to discover that pages 113 through 128 were missing and pages 97 through 111 were in the book twice. Don't know of this was only for the current shipping batch, but returned book for refund. Had a previous version from 1993 and wanted an updated version since it is really helpful for the novice investor.

A worthy update to earlier editions, with current market behavior information and international updates. This is an excellent and remarkably clear basic guide to money and the markets. I can't think of a better introductory (and basic reference guide) for investors. Not a how-to, but a what-is and why book.
