After reading this book and its sequel, and KP Yohanana from Gospel for asia, you will either be convicted of your sin of silence and insincerity of lost souls or you will not be. If you are the latter, you most likely are not a true follower of Christ. Besides the Bible, this is the most inspiration with motivation book I've ever read. Wake up american christians and stop working for the american dream, its nots Gods dream. I pray for revival in our churches!

Wow... I am almost at a loss for words. My first impression is shame. I am ashamed of myself for my comfortable life here in America. I pray that God will move me and use me as He has moved and used Brother Yun. Something tells me Jesus' return is NOT far away.

The book is a absolute page turner. Best of all it is NON-Fiction. It is so encouraging to me as a Christian in California, USA. So far removed from any real struggle, any real persecution. It is as if I am part of the Church of Laodicea, though I am rich, I am poor.

I had read a brief summary of the book before reading it, but I was not prepared for the impact it had on me. The punishment that Brother Yun had received in prision was beyond imagination, and yet he was able to praise the Lord for it. Many million were brought to Christ by the house churches which were established through his leadership. These groups are people who take the Gospel very seriously, and with their limited funds send out missionaries to other countries. His dedication is an example for the church at large today.

I recommend this book as an excellent example of the Lord's work all over the world. It will wake up a sleepy Western believer to see God's work in all the nations. The story is of Brother Yun and the various trials, persecutions, and signs and wonders that the Lord performed in his life as a leader of the house church movement in China from the early 1980s. It truly is hard to put down.

(Hide Review...)  Inspiring story of how God is moving in China
Reviewer Permalink
After reading this book you'll understand why some believe that Asia may become the next center of Christianity. With the West becoming more secular and morally bankrupt, God is moving in China to spread the Gospel. Who would have thought that Korea, formerly a primarily Buddhist country, would become a Christian nation that sends out multitudes of missionaries? In the same way, God is using the Chinese house churches to spread the Gospel not only throughout China but also throughout the rest of Asia and beyond. The story of Brother Yun shows how the Gospel began to grow in China under persecution. This is inspiring and motivating. However, it was hard to relate the sold-out Christianity of the Chinese house churches to the soft, laissez-faire Christianity we know in the West. May God bring revival not only throughout Asia but also to the West.

A little over a year ago, I read Randy Alcorn's novel, "Safely Home." And it was based on Chinese Christians and the persecution they might go through in China. And my first thought was how rough that has to really be. Being a master storyteller, Randy Alcorn barely scratched the surface, and he could've really gone deep. After my dad read "Safely Home," he found this book, "The Heavenly Man," and basically told me, "You've got to read this! This is amazing!" If you think you're some kind of victim just because you've been made fun of for your Christian faith, wake up! Christians like Brother Yun know something about suffering, and how to rejoice in the process. HUH? Read on!

And this really is nothing short of amazing. Brother Yun started preaching at the age of 16. Like in Alcorn's book, there are church house meetings. And the Chinese government hates Christians, and has ways of dealing with them. So for those of us who have these ideas of being a simple POW with just a few beatings, it goes a lot further than that. The torture that Brother Yun suffered is nuts! And this guy can rejoice and witness to his cell mates about the glory of God. Seeing miracles, and experiencing them, and you'd have to be crazy not to believe in God.

Yun makes it clear that when we are in God's will, God has us exactly where He wants us. It is a reminder to stay in the will of God and to keep focused on the reward God has for us. And being in God's will means to be ready for everything God has for us here on Earth. That means that we'll probably do some suffering, and that we will bear our own cross.

Would anybody line up for the testimony of Brother Yun? All I can say is WOW! This is an amazing life. A true eye opener!

This book isnt for you if violence makes you queasy. I thought it was unbelievable what Yun went through, and it was an interesting book. I learned much about the history of Christianity, which I new nothing about before. However, I felt the book was very repetitive, as I cannot count how many times Yun went to prison, was electrocuted with a baton, beaten senselessly, etc. I definitely believe in miracles, but everytime I turned the page there was another one.......so many that it almost seemed unbelievable and I wondered if this story was actually true.

This is a unique, life-changing book. I found this story of a simple, humble Chinese brother and how the risen Lord appeared to them to bless, heal, save and call his family into a life of service for the Gospel and for the name of the Lord. It is much about our Lord and not so much about brother Yun, and this is one of the marks of its authenticity. I found it deeply convicting, life-changing and inspirational. It is a reminder that the call of Christ is a call to the cross, and that His ways are infinitely above ours. I also feel I got a glimpse of one of the ways God will reach what we westerners call the unreached peoples of the "10-40 window" and what our Chinese brothers and sisters call the way back to Jerusalem. Read this book, my friend, and be blessed!

I've just read some negative reviews and rebuttals to the book "The Heavenly Man" in which I found this link that provides the truth about Brother Yun and the book written by Paul Hattaway, the author of the book. Sadly there is much disinformation being spread about Brother Yun and Paul hopefully puts it to bed never to be resurrected again. If you haven't read this yet and you are skeptical about the content of the book, then you need to spend the 15 minutes required to read this letter.

I couldn't believe what I was reading in this book and to know that this story took place very recently is thought provoking to say the least. I have always had a desire to know more about China in relation to the underground church and the spread of the gospel there and that is why I purchased this book in the first place. Yun's life story is absolutely amazing and his faith in the midst of severe torture puts me as a comfortable, American Christian to shame. The only reason I give this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because the literary style seemed a bit weak but the story itself is off the chart.

Brother Yun's story is incredible, beyond what mere words can describe. We're talking apostolic conditions here, miraculous jail escapes, healings, visions for communications, praying and fasting, and thousands coming to Jesus Christ, conversions of peasants, farmers, prison guards, Communist leaders as well as hardened murderers.

Read this book, I promise you will not see things like you did before.

If you only read one book (aside from God's word) the rest of your life, read this book. It's a great testimony of the quality, depth, and richness of relationship one can have with Jesus Christ. After reading it, I am somewhat embarrassed to idenify myself as a Christian given the ease of my life compared to those written of in this book! An amazing story of God's power and providence. The testimony of brother Yun is one that is provoking me out of complacency and on towards longing for God to reveal himself more and more in my life. This is not a light-hearted, feel-good Christian book. This is a "here's what it costs to follow Jesus" book. Absolutely wonderful!

If the account in this book is true, then there can be little doubt that Christianity is also true.

I'm an agnostic who's wrestled with the question of Christianity for at least 10 years, and this book has perhaps finally given me the best evidence I've ever seen that Christianity is true. All other arguments and testimonies I've considered have been unpersuasive because they all seemed amenable to naturalistic explanations. Most accounts in this book do not. This book gives me hope that perhaps my search for truth has finally concluded.

Almost from the first page, I found myself weeping. This book could have written about the early Christians who suffered physical torture and a martyr's death for their faith in a Risen Christ. But we know that this suffering and persecution against Brother Yun and other Christians is going on today in other countries, particularly China. I had to stop many times because I could not see the words for tears--tears of shame at my own lack of faith and boldness for the Lord, tears of grief at the suffering of other Christians who do not have the freedom to worship, tears of joy at the miracles God performed to show Himself to a nation of people who have been held captive by a godless evil government, and tears for my Lord who suffered beyond anything we can imagine to provide an holy atonement for our sins and build a bridge on our behalf to a Holy God. I have read this book twice and have given it to every member of my family. Most importantly, I have prayed every day story for him and all the other "house Christians" in China and throughout Asia since reading Brother Yun's story. He is truly a most remarkable Heavenly Man--a man who has an unshakeable faith in God, willing to suffer death if necessary...so that others would come to know Christ. As he says about himself and the underground Christians in China, "We love Christ more than our own lives."

this book is so amazing it changed my life completely it gave me such a new outlook outlife and i was a person who was only vagely aware that persucution was still going on and all of the miracles are so amazing shortly afte reading this book the Lord put it on my heart to become a missionary. I was reading the reviews on here and someone posted a letter saying that Brother Yun is a fake and a con man so i decided to research it a little. The idea of him being a "black sheep" in the Chinese church seems a little ridiculous to me because of all of the people that he has led to the Lord. I mean the fact that he has led thousands of people to Christ is an undisputed fact, how could a man like that be a fake? so i found this letter written by eight house church leaders in china:

An open letter from 8 Chinese Church Leaders

To the body of Christ within China and overseas

According to the truth of Bible and for the sake of the unity of the church, we hereby are willing to bear witness regarding brother Liu Zhenying (known in the West as Brother Yun, the author of "The Heavenly Man"), whom we have served together and known deeply over the years. He is faithful servant of God, and of humble and honest character. Brother Liu has been called by the Lord since his youth, and has been serving The Only True God and the gospel with all of his heart and abilities, and he has also given his best for the beloved believers who are suffering in mainland China. Regarding the financial offerings from the saints, he has always conducted himself above board; never has he taken any offering for personal benefit. Regarding his position in work, he does not indulge in self pride or self promotion, furthermore, he has never considered himself the only legal representative of Chinese house church, as some have claimed.

Unfortunately, there is "someone" living in Hamburg, Germany, who keeps sending out accusations through the internet, email, letters, cassette tapes and CDs to discredit brother Yun's reputation. We have checked the accusations thoroughly and found the accusations to be false, baseless and a distortion of the true facts. In addition, certain persons being quoted in the accusations also deny having discredited brother Yun in anyway. They also expressed their displeasure of being falsely used, out of context, and without their consent and by distortion of the true facts. This matter is not merely concerning the reputation of an individual, it is also concerning the witness and unity of the kingdom of Christ, therefore, we just could not simply be a bystander, we are determined to object the false accusations with this open letter and to correct the misperception caused. At the same time, we sincerely hope churches would verify the accusations thoroughly, and not fall into the trap of Satan who wants to destroy the progress of the work of gospel in Europe. Therefore, we have unanimously decided to write this open letter to the churches in China and overseas, to verify the facts, and support brother Yun's work in various locations. We want to call upon the saints from every corner of the world to heed the call to bring the gospel back to Jerusalem, while waiting upon our Lord's glorious return.

My wife got me this book and it sat for months because somehow I knew it would be hard to read. I finally got the courage to take it to work and read it during lunch. And yes, it was hard to read without crying and it was hard to read while eating. I don't recommend reading this during lunch if you have a queasy stomach. I agree with the reviewer who gave this book a very fitting description: "painfully inspirational."

If you're looking for a nice story with warm fuzzies about God's love, this book is not for you. If your looking for a genuine example of a real relationship with God, Brother Yun and the Chinese believers will inspire your faith and help you examine what's really important in life and your walk with God. Maybe you can even learn a little bit about contentment along the way.

I served as a foreign missionary for 14 years but never came close to the trials this man went through. Hard to read or not, you've got to read this book!

Reviewer Permalink
Brother Yun and his wife provide an intimate view of Christianity in the vital, underground church in China. Not many Christians want to share in the suffering of the body of Christ, but it is a reality of life in a corrupt and dying world. In his years in and out of prison, brother Yun with the power and trust provided by the Holy Spirit, endured the worst that the Chinese prison system could think of doing to him without actually killing him. And they are pretty good at it. Through this hellfire, he experienced the sustaining comfort and provision of God, and he emerged battered but victorious, refined by fire, and conformed to the image of Christ. Read this book for a spiritually-relevant alternative to the "making a fortune in real estate by claiming the promises of God" country-club Christianity.

I can't say enough about how wonderful this book is. The life of Yun really does seem like a modern day book of acts. It was refreshing to read a modern day account of God using someone in such a magnificent way. The account just captured my spirit and really spoke to me about what it means to truly follow Christ. No holds barred! Life Changing!!!!! Get a copy for yourself and for someone you love. It will draw you into a deeper and closer relationship with your savior.

This was the most incredible book I have ever read, aside from the Bible of course. I cried throughout the entire book. The Lord spoke to me through this book, and I was challenged like never before to stand for what I believe. Everyone needs to read this book. You will not be the same.

Have you ever wondered how God speaks to someone who doesn't have a Bible or access to the Word? This testimonial will isnpire you and grant you faith in God's omnipotence. Brother Yun is proof of God's accessibility and answers to every prayer. While the book was inspirational, it was also painful to read about the persecution that Chinese Christians are facing. Oh, that we could all be so faithful as this man and his family.
