My Horizontal Life

In this raucous collection of true-life stories, actress and comedian Chelsea Handler recounts her time spent in the social trenches with that wild, strange, irresistible, and often gratifying beast: the one-night stand.

You've either done it or know someone who has: the one-night stand, the familiar outcome of a night spent at a bar, sometimes the sole payoff for your friend's irritating wedding, or the only relief from a disastrous vacation. Often embarrassing and uncomfortable, occasionally outlandish, but most times just a necessary and irresistible evil, the one-night stand is a social rite as old as sex itself and as common as a bar stool.

Enter Chelsea Handler. Gorgeous, sharp, and anything but shy, Chelsea loves men and lots of them. My Horizontal Life chronicles her romp through the different bedrooms of a variety of suitors, a no-holds-barred account of what can happen between a man and a sometimes very intoxicated, outgoing woman during one night of passion. From her short fling with a Vegas stripper to her even shorter dalliance with a well-endowed little person, from her uncomfortable tryst with a cruise ship performer to her misguided rebound with a man who likes to play leather dress-up, Chelsea recalls the highs and lows of her one-night stands with hilarious honesty. Encouraged by her motley collection of friends (aka: her partners in crime) but challenged by her family members (who at times find themselves a surprise part of the encounter), Chelsea hits bottom and bounces back, unafraid to share the gritty details. My Horizontal Life is one guilty pleasure you won't be ashamed to talk about in the morning.

This book is definitely enjoyable because Chelsea is so funny, likeable, and a decent writer. The book is in the category "memoir/humor" but I really think that even though it wasn't meant to be, it could be a psychology text too. It's nice that she takes her situation lightly, but she really is psychologically damaged (not saying most people aren't). Her perspective seems a little wack, like it's so normal to her to drink THAT much and have THAT much promiscuous, virtually anonymous sex. To read the book, you would think strangers just walk up to each other, say hello and go have sex. Promiscuity makes me pretty uneasy, and so I took one star off the book for her taking it so lightly.

On this amazon page, a review from Publishers Weekly reads, "Opening with a cute story from when she was seven...." I think the reviewer is missing the point completely. The story was not cute AT ALL. I don't know what purpose Chelsea had in mind when choosing the story (probably just the sex connection), but it reveals much more. It is a glimpse into the larger framework of the really bad parenting (common in our culture) that created the promiscuous alcoholic adult. Hardly a cute story, more of a violent, very psychologically revealing story.

I think Chelsea may be missing the point too, by spinning her wheels searching for a need to be fulfilled over and over, when it is impossible. But hey, she is funny as hell. and she seemed to come around at the end!

I like to watch Chelsea's show, and she has a wry sense of humor; however, the way she conducted herself as a young woman is both frightening and sad. The thought of two underage women constantly drunk and inviting Godess knows whom into their beds, including criminals and absolute undesirables, wreaks of low self esteem, lack of self respect and no boundaries. I have to wonder if young women know they are putting themselves in danger when they get drunk and go home with strangers?? Not to mention diseases???? This lifestyle is not healthy. Think before you leap or read! I don't recommend this book to young women, who may be influenced to behave in unhealthy ways.

not great... I actually liked her newer book better (are you there vodka.. its me Chelsea).. After reading that book first, I was thinking this one had to be even more raunchy... but it wasn't what I expected. It wasn't bad... I enjoy the way she writes. I just was let down after reading the other book first.

I read "Are you there Vodka, It's Me Chelsea?" and loved it so much that I immediately ordered "My Horizontal Life". Chelsea has a brilliant way of telling stories that makes you fell like you are out having a drink with a close friend. Not one to pass on to my grandma but definitely all of my girlfriends!

i purchased this book because i was a huge fan of chelsea handler, and when i recieved it, i tore into it like i was a fat kid, and this book was a box of toaster streudels . . . one page in the entire book made me laugh- the rest were good ideas with too little else. i didn't so little as smirk through the bulk of it, and the filler and one-liners between each major detail were inadequate, and clever at best. nothing progressed in a smooth, and believable manner- the crap tangents seemed to dilute even chelsea's give an s factor when she came back to the main idea. every character was so poorly sketched, the bulk of everything in the book is based on the simplest stereotypes with one or two defining traits- max. which is fine- stereotypes are based on facts, but every character is merely a prop as we watch drunk, soulless, chelsea sketch a short life of doing absolutely nothing. most of the 'insight' and subjective material comes in the form of a very rough joke, or is unnecessary and disjointed, and actually takes away from the idea. did anyone edit this book?

It isn't often that I find a book that makes me laugh so much that I couldn't take it anywhere. I also felt obligated to read parts of it aloud to anyone in my family who was nearby. I read the one-star reviews and can only conclude that they actually want to read literature. This isn't it. This is about a girl with no morals who knows it and doesn't care and has a way with words. She rats out herself and her family, which has some mild shock value as well. Really worth it. I want to buy a copy for everybody I know.

This is a hilarious book!! I love every short story she told. Chelsea is really honest about herself in this book. She puts all her craziness out there for people to enjoy it. It is and easy read. Too bad I haven't heard great things about the book that follows this one. However, this book displays well her comedy skills.

Chelsea's smart, funny and raunchy in a hold nothing back sort of way that makes you wonder what Mae West might be like if she were around today. This is exactly what a collection of fictional comedic vignettes should be.

I've casually enjoyed Chelsea Handler's TV show for some time. She's witty and clever on television, so I thought her book would offer more of the same. Unfortunately, this book changed my perception of Chelsea, and once I finished the book I came away from the experience feeling I wasted my time. Chelsea's experiences really do seem like aimless recollections of a shallow existence. As another reviewer pointed out, her memoir reads like a series of Sex in the City scripts minus the fashion. Unfortunately, Chelsea often comes off as pretentious, vapid, and morally bankrupt. I kept hoping the narrative arc of the book would reveal some growth and personal reflection. Instead, the book continuously chronicled Chelsea's nihilistic existence. Sure there are some humorous moments, but they are too few. Many of Chelsea's recollections focus on her insatiable desire for sex and a general contempt for those who aren't physical specimens. In an attempt to be funny, Chelsea's lack of compassion for others (i.e. her roommate or fellow booze cruise passengers) simply reveals her hollow character. There's little redeeming quality in Chelsea's memoir; for those looking for self-deprecating laughs, a much better choice would be among the works of Laurie Notaro.

Handler is a train wreck who doesn't know when to stop sharing/lying, although her willingness to take risks and make fun of herself is a key factor in her persona and her success. I'm guessing being the youngest of six kids had a lot to do with it. Like most creative twenty-somethings for whom college and/or traditional employment isn't the obvious choice, it takes her a while to figure out her personal path. I was disappointed by the book, probably because it was so well hyped, and with the exception of a couple of laugh-out-loud moments, I expected it to be funnier than it was. Although I do enjoy Handler as a comedienne, and I would have loved seeing her in the green M&M costume.

first of all, i must confess, i'm a guy ... and maybe that's the problem i have with this book.

my appetite to read is usually consumed by world war II, true crime and political-themed books, but i like variety in my reading and add healthy servings of pop-culture, autobiographies and humor to the mix. this book was recommended to me as being "hilarious" and "eye opening" ... so i figured i would read it and be entertained by a woman's perspective of things ... i couldn't finish it soon enough.

to me, this book was nothing but a text version of "sex and the city's" samantha. i'm open-minded when it comes to women and don't have a problem at all with handler's wide-open sexuality (no pun intended) ... the book just wasn't funny and reads more like a girl trying like hell to tell a story like a guy talking to his friends. it was predictable and the recollections appear more embellished to create a disgusting reaction (i did find the skid-mark situation humorous ... until the token panty-eating dog entered the story ... then my eyes rolled)

several years ago, my then-pregnant wife was recommended jenny mccarthy's book about pregnancy, which i also read. mccarthy and handler's books left me with the same feeling ... two gorgeous women, successful comediennes who try too hard being flannel-shirt wearing, beer guzzling, burp and farting machines (kathy griffin is one of the few that can pull this off).
