Design Elements: A Graphic Style Manual

The graphic design equivalent to Strunk & White's The Elements of Style

This book is simply the most compact and lucid handbook available outlining the basic principles of layout, typography, color usage, and space.

Being a creative designer is often about coming up with unique design solutions. Unfortunately, when the basic rules of design are ignored in an effort to be distinctive, design becomes useless. In language, a departure from the rules is only appreciated as great literature if recognition of the rules underlies the text. Graphic design is a "visual language," and brilliance is recognized in designers whose work seems to break all the rules, yet communicates its messages clearly.

This book is a fun and accessible handbook that presents the fundamentals of design in lists, tips, brief text, and examples. Chapters include Graphic Design: What It Is; What Are They and What Do They Do?; 20 Basic Rules of Good Design; Form and Space-The Basics; Color Fundamentals; Choosing and Using Type; The World of Imagery; Putting it All Together?Essential Layout Concepts; The Right Design Choices: 20 Reminders for Working Designers; and Breaking the Rules: When and Why to Challenge all the Rules of this Book.

Amazing book by Timothy. It's perfect for young designers, unlike myself, who need to learn basics in graphic design. As a more experienced professional I had fun reading the book and I'm gonna keep it in my office for use of all new interns so they find out a little more by themselves. The only downside I see is the small grey texts, but fortunately my eyes are still in perfect conditions.

(Hide Review...)  Fascinating look at how to design
Reviewer Permalink
This book is a fascinating look at how to design, and I like it! Every page communicates. One expects the text to communicate, but the examples also communicate. They are carefully chosen to demonstrate or amplify the principle under discussion. The book is packed with information such that one need not even read the book end-to-end. I've been opening the book to random pages, finding something new each time, and learning a lot.

As one might expect, the author begins with a definition of graphic design. He then offers 20 rules of design with one rule per page. This leads to chapters on form and space, color, typography, layout, and more. He finishes with a list of the 20 rules and a discussion of conditions for breaking them.

The design of the book is impressive. It's full color throughout and loaded with visually seductive page layouts. As near as I can tell, none of it is waste or filler. It all serves a purpose. The only downside is, the text and some of the examples do seem a little small. It would be better if the book were physically larger. I would gladly have paid extra for that, but the size is what it is.

Words cannot express how much I enjoy reading this book. It's stuffed with thoughts, ideas, and designy goodness. I've read through and investigated many books on graphic design, and none of them had this sort of impact. I attribute it to the author's expertise and passion for the topic. It's infectious. Five stars seem inadequate, but they'll have to do.

Good looking book with lots of interesting examples. I could only read it for a short time without my eyes hurting. It's ironic that a book about design uses such a small font that I have a hard time reading it. I don't use cheaters yet, but maybe it's time after squinting my way through this.

(Hide Review...)  Great handbook for Graphic Designers

I'm just starting out as a Designer (Still & Video) & I found this book was really engaging and well written. Full of examples, there's a design to go with each paragraph. I've found it really helpful when working with design concepts. This is a great handbook. I'm really glad I got it!

I find this book to be well written, the examples are clear and to the point, and the layout is attractive. There are several good Graphic Design books on the market, and I would include this one in any list of that sort. The only criticism I have is an aesthetic (and for some of us) practical one. The designer of the book chose a very small font for the picture callouts (captions), and also chose light gray on white for the text color. For those us us in the "bi-focal" generation, that makes the picture captions rather difficult to read. I would recommend this book, but get out your little magnifying glass before you open it.

Good introductory book on design. Since I've never had any sort of training in Graphic design, these concepts were really useful. Not done reading yet but so far it's been a good read.
