The actual exam and the content depth of this book are in completely different worlds. The exam questions are very deep and complex while the book only superficially covers each topic and spends a great deal of time on commands which make only a minimal appearance on the actual exam.
The test "simulator" questions on the included CD-ROM are simplistic and way to easy compared to the actual test which gives you a false sense of security. You will know it when you are hit on the side of the head by the real test and it will be like wow, what happened, I scored 95% or higher on the CD-ROM simulations. In addition, many of the questions on the actual test aren't even covered in the book. Believe me, I went back to the book after taking the test and the topic detail WAS NOT IN THIS BOOK. I would not waste my money on this book if you are going to use it to prep for the real test. Save your money and buy real test study material online. You will be extremely disappointed with this "study" guide. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-31 04:48:05 EST)

Covered most of the content I encountered on the exam and wasn't as verbose and dry as some other Cisco Press titles I've read. I was glad that I had first hand experience with the ADU and ASTU since this was on the exam but not in the book.

Haven't finished the book yet, but so far not that great. The writting does not keep your attention, but maybe it will get better. Have only gone through 2 chapters so far.

This was the only source I used for the exam. While it did a pretty good job at covering everything, I did notice questions on the exam that I know for a fact were not covered in the book. I'm not sure if those questions counted toward my score, but I do believe I answered them correctly anyhow. The CD that came with the book was a waste of time. The quiz chapters were out of order and had some content that wasn't even in the book (Multicasting amongst other things.) I am hoping for better quality out of the BCSI book I'm about to read.

A good text, overall, but a test taker of the new BCMSN exam may need additional resources to pass this exam. I took and passed the exam after extensive study, and found 10-12 wireless questions on the examination in addition to the switching topics.

I agree with the review by R. Bunal. I took 13 certification exams in the past (Cisco and Microsoft) using only 1 book each (Exam Cram when available) and passed first time every time. Never had any problems.
But this book does not match this test. The questions in the book are simple and one dimensional compared to the exam. The exam questions are very multi dimensional. The book also totally skips things brought up on the exam - not even touched on. And the book drones on a lot about stuff not on the test. The test also uses different terminology than this book. I do recommend that you find other resources than this book alone. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-12-15 06:17:50 EST)

I studied using this book for only 3 months and I scored 825 on the exam. Great book if you already know a bit about WLANS. The wireless section doesn't give enough details about the Cisco's Unified Wireless Network and the practice questions are not a challenge.

The book is hopelessly overly wordy at times, as if the author was attempting to increase page count. I firmly believe I could condense the book down by 100 pages or more. However, if you have plenty of time, this is an exhaustive examination of everything BCMSN related. I found VERY few errors in the material, and none in the test yourself questions.

I used this book as my only study tool to prepare for the updated BCMSN exam. This was also my first book from the Exam Certification Guide series. I found it to be very pleasant to read. It gets straight to the point, and does a very good job in preparing you for the exam. The only draw back are the practice questions on the CD. They are way too easy, and might only give you a false sense of security. But I think this is true for all the practice exams that come with Cisco Press books.

I found this book and excellent tool to help me prepare for the Cisco BCMSN. The explanations are well written and easy to understand. The CD has loads of exam-like questions and the scenarios in the back of the book are very helpful. I passed the 642-812 using this book and other study materials and labs from the course in the Cisco Networking Academy.

This exam certification guide is quite good. Being an exam certification guide, it is more direct than the Authorized Self Learning books. For me, I find the self-learning books to be slow and a bit verbose. This exam certification guide explains the material in a short concise way that facilitates learning.
It has many examples that help to illustrate the different concepts. However, there are small errors on most of the examples. They're not critical, but they are somewhat annoying. E.g. In the diagram, switches A, B and C have addresses aaaa.aaaa.aaaa, bbbb.bbbb.bbbb, and cccc.cccc.cccc respectively. In the explanation of the diagram, the addresses are 0000.0000.0001, 0000.0000.0002, and 0000.0000.0003. So, it's not a major problem, but it does make one question the accuracy of some of the examples; especially if you are unsure of the concepts being presented. Like all certification guides, the software is a little buggy. Most of the questions have the correct solution(s). However, a few do not. This can cause problems when trying to use the software to study for the exam. Hopefully they will release an update for the software soon to correct the errors. Despite the shortcomings, I still rate this book at 5 stars because it contains good material in an easy to understand format without being excessively verbose or terse. If you want to learn about switched networking, voice and wireless, this is an excellent text. It is well written, easy to read and understand. I especially liked the wireless section, which explained Cisco's LWAPP architecture. I am using some of the concepts in my enterprise network designs.
But,the reason I bought the book was to supplement my networking experience in helping me pass the 642-812 exam. I diligently studied this book along with an older 642-811 text, took notes, reviewed the material, took the pratice exams from the CD, and praticed configuring Cisco switches. This method worked well for me in the past, scoring high on most exams (this one was for recertification). For some reason Cisco has made this exam MUCH more difficult than past exams. The exam questions were much more complex than the pratice questions in the book and CD. My suggestion would be to read this book, but suppliment it with other material and EXTENSIVE hands on switch configuration and analysis. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-02-26 07:24:46 EST)
