In this, the second volume of their study of the Messerschmitt Me262, J. Richard Smith and Eddie J. Creek examine the impact the Me262 made on the course of the European air war following its operational debut with Erpobungskommando 262 in the summer of 1944. This extraordinary new aircraft was a vital element to a possible revival of Nazi Germany's flagging war effort. Using combat reports and eye-witness accounts, the authors reveal the later tactical successes and failures of the aircraft as it was deployed in both the fighter role with Kommando Nowotny and in the bomber role with Kommando Schenk and KG51 over the western front in the autumn of 1944.
This book includes an in-depth look at the array of weapons systems designed for the aircraft as well as detailed descriptions of the projected rocket-powered interceptor and heavily armed and armored variants. Many never-before-published photographs and high-precision technical scale drawings plus full-color interpretations and biographies of many of the military personalities associated with the early operations of the aircraft. |

This is the second volume of a four volume set. All four volumes will set you back over $150.00. If you are a fan of this plane as I am, It is worth every penny. The first volume covers the genesis of the plane. The second volume examines armament and it's entry into the German war effort. Filled with excellent photos, color plates, and technical drawings, this book is a delight to read. But If you are not a nut on the subject, you may find it is too much information.
This four volume set is really for the person who wants the nitty gritty about the plane. If you want an overview of the plane there are plenty of excellent books (Me262: Arrow to the future, to name one) that are out there. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-09 01:15:10 EST)
