|
This practical handbook provides the reader with enough background and specific information to begin conducting thermal analysis and to participate in the thermal design of spacecraft systems.
The book is a revised and updated edition of Satellite Thermal Control Handbook, published in 1994. The name change reflects the expanded scope of this work, which now includes thermal environments and design techniques for interplanetary spacecraft, in addition to the Earth-orbiting satellites that were the focus of the original handbook. The reader will now find an updated characterization of the thermal environment in Earth orbit, new material documenting the environments of interplanetary missions, more detailed information about each of the thermal control hardware elements found in the first edition, and presentation of some newer technologies such as heat switches and precision temperature control techniques. |

"This volume collects information necessary for the design, analysis, testing, and operation of the various instruments, sensors, and other devices that must be cooled to cryogenic temperatures. Topics of the 23 chapters include stored expendable cooling systems, radiant coolers, cryogenic radiator design and performance, the components in a closed-cycle Joule-Thomson cryocooler, integration of a cooler into a spacecraft system, thermal control margins, and flexible conductive links."
--SciTech Book News "Spacecraft Thermal Control Handbook has a very good analysis of radiator for cryogenic spaced based cooling applications [and] does a very good review of cryogenic thermal energy storage systems." --TechRD (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-12-27 10:01:03 EST)

This book is essentially an update of the author's previous work, The Satellite Thermal Control Handbook, and is the collective writings of dozens of engineers who specialize in the design and analysis of spacecraft thermal control systems. While his first book focused on thermal control systems for unmanned Earth orbiting satellites, this new book expands on this information and includes interplanetary probes, the space shuttle and the most recent advances in thermal control system hardware.
Over my many years in the aerospace industry, I have designed numerous thermal control systems for various types of spacecraft, and I have used this book countless times, especially for its extremely detailed and useful information on Multi-Layer Insulation thermal blankets and aerogel. There are also some very helpful chapters on thermal testing, thermal environments and thermal contact information. The only area that I found lacking sufficient detail was the sections on active thermal control systems (pumped fluids), such as those used on the international space station, all manned vehicles and on some space probes. This important spacecraft thermal control method is examined in two small chapters and the only manned system examined in the space shuttle orbiter. There are many more systems. Finally, it should be noted that this book is highly technical and not geared towards the casual reader who is interested general spaceflight. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-27 09:55:24 EST)
