Christian Faith and the Truth Behind 9/11: A Call to Reflection and Action

Probing disturbing questions that beg for a response from the Christian community, distinguished scholar of religion and popular writer David Ray Griffin provides a hard-hitting analysis of the official accounts of the events of September 11, 2001. A tireless investigator, Griffin has sorted through enormous amounts of government and independent data and brought to the surface some very unsettling inconsistencies about what really happened. In this, his latest book, he analyzes the evidence about 9/11 and then explores a distinctively Christian perspective on these issues, taking seriously what we know about Jesus' life, death, and teachings. Drawing a parallel between the Roman Empire of antiquity and the American Empire of today, he applies Jesus' teachings to the current political administration, and he explores how Christian churches, as a community intending to be an incarnation of the divine, can and should respond.

I think the concept for this book is excellent. Those of the Christian faith have an obligation to look at both sides of the 9/11 issue, and they should be asking the questions that beg for valid answers on this topic.
Unfortunately much like our present day corporate owned media,Christians remain mum about much of the discrepancies in the official line of what happened before and during this catastrophe. The complacent silence of Christians during these frightening times will be a dark blot on the history of Christianity.
So I feel a book on this topic is absolutely needed.

I purchased it hoping it would be a book to stir Christian thought and cause Christians to begin to question the very troubling trends we see in our physical and political world.

This book does make a good start at doing this.

The first six chapters do perform reasonably well in presenting good factual evidence that causes one to question and wonder about many events surrounding 9/11. In the sections on "false flag operations", Griffin does a descent job on connecting government involvment in similar devastating historic events. I think more pertinent details should have been included on these topics though.

However, after chapter #6 Mr. Griffin takes the reader in, what I feel, is a train of thought that goes to far off the path of the 9/11 issue. In chapters 7 and 8 we are taken on a voyage into some very deep theological arguments and philosophy on how the world originated, the origin of good and evil, the demonic and the divine, etc. Granted, I don't necessarily disagree with some of what Mr. Griffin says in these chapters, but it begins to become too much of a detour after a while. Some of his feelings on these topics due draw a solid connection on why the events of 9/11 happened, and what was the source of these events. In that, more Christians need to take note and realize that there was more to 9/11 than meets the eye.
However, I think Mr. Griffin goes too deep into topics of theology and philosophy that tend to "pull" the reader in a different direction. For example, Christians who believe that the world was created as the Bible says in a literal manner, may be offended at what appears to be Mr.Griffins belief in the "long age" theory of creation which he defends here. If he wanted to go deeply into these topics I feel it should have been placed in another book, not here.
The author writes the book with the intention of drawing Christians together to reflect on current world events, but then includes "heavy" topics that at times can divide Christians. It creates a poor flow for the readers attention. This area of the book could have been drastically reduced and made more easily acceptable to all readers.

The last section of the book tackles the issues of how Christians should be trying to have an influence in reducing the growing threats to our peace and freedoms. Again, this section is well written for the most part, and calls Christians to be more pro-active in their world. It asks Christians to re-affirm Jesus as our leader, not earthly government, which can easily stray in the wrong direction. It is a call to follow Jesus' example of confronting issues that threaten our human existence, both in the temporal and the eternal, and recognizing evil when you see it. Here as well though, Christians need to unite on many of these issues to have a major impact. Yet Mr.Griffin has already alienated some Christian readers in chapters 7 and 8.
So the topic is an excellent one, the facts are well presented, but the authors personal philosophy, and theological leanings should have taken more of a back seat in the book.
Others may find this book "flows" well, I didn't. As a result it loses its impact on the reader.

The first part of this book was very well-done and the author does an excellent job approaching the topic, to break down the barriers the average American would have to believing that our government would do such a thing. Are Americans hiding their faces from the ugly facts when their duty as citizens in a democratic nation is to act on behalf of these human tragedies that we are benefitting from?

My issue and reason for the 3-star review is the second part of the book. He, by his review of historic religious documents, poses the question, "What if God isn't in charge? What if the Devil could be winning?" There's nothing wrong with asking questions, but coming from someone who seemed authoritative in religious scripture history, it did shake me up and ruin a perfectly good day. So I asked God, whose reply was that He is Soverign, Intelligence/Wisdom is in the Heavens and the Earth should be glad. Whew! I wanted to issue this warning to readers, tho, that just as in Jesus' day, too much scholarly reading of the words, instead of faithful prayer, can lead one away from God instead of toward Him. Application of pure logic in an issue of faith can be misleading.

Review of Christian Faith and the Truth behind 911 by David Ray Griffin.

About 1/3 of the book is a recap of evidence that the World Trade Center buildings could not have collapsed from the airplane impacts and fires but must have been a "controlled demolition" and therefore an inside job.

About 1/3 is history of "false flag operations" that are standard military practice to gain civilian support of their warmaking, ordered from the top down and carried out by the equivalent of our CIA and/or military "intelligence" and blamed on the Enemy.

And 1/3 is a theological development of Christian principles that can help us "think the unthinkable".

He develops the idea that Jesus was a revolutionary, urging the Jews to resist the Roman occupation and the Temple establishment who were collaborators. So He was executed as a political threat.

Then he discusses Good (Divine) and Evil (Demonic) from a modern, naturalistic viewpoint. The universal life force, which has evolved the world as we know it, is Good (God) and the phenomena that curtail that process such as Imperial power and slavery are Evil. And then he goes back to the traditional personification of these powers and their attributes. To quote from his page 123:

"Monotheism is the doctrine that there is only one truly divine power, only one power worthy of worship. Monotheism does not, however, necessarily imply monism, the doctrine that there is only power, period. Monotheism is compatible with the belief in one or more centers of power that have some power of their own, and hence some autonomy, vis-a-vis divine power. Because a partially autonomous power could go bad, using its power to oppose divine purposes, monotheism could be compatible with belief in a demonic power.

"In fact, Jeffrey Russell, in his well-received volumes on the history of the idea of the devil, has argued that the New Testament view is best called 'semidualistic monotheism'. In contrast with full-fledged dualism, a semidualistic position does not hold, as would a fully dualistic position, that the demonic is wholly autonomous and equal to God in cosmic scope and power. But it does allow some real autonomy to the demonic."

Thus although he speaks of a divine reality, he does so without indulging the belief in a supernatural deity, which encourages magical thinking about divine omnipotence, and hence without denying the human responsibility for the good and evil in our civilization. He says he advocates "process theology" and I quote section headings in his development (pp 131-138):
"Self-Determination All the Way Down"
"Divine Power as Persuasive"
"Creation as Risk"
"Creaturely Creation and the Demonic"
"Demonic Power as Uncontrollable by Divine Power"
In this context of traditional personification of the adjectives we use - GOOD and EVIL - to communicate our judgement of human activities, he applies the Biblical record of Jesus in the context of Roman occupation to our contemporary world domination. We are the EVIL EMPIRE of absentee owners that tries to control the world by supporting local tyrants who do business the way we want them to, and threatening military occupation where-ever that's not possible, in the name of "Democracy"! Money talks, with propaganda that idealizes greed, spawns fear, and buys politicians.

But here's my comment: We can't win this perpetual war, short of blowing the whole world to hell, because in this Information Age insurgencies will go on forever. Everyone knows that government of, by, and for the people is possible thanks to our own revolutionary founders. I'm a hopeless idealist.

Dr. David Ray Griffin speak specifically to the audience he knows best - individuals of the Christian faith.

The theologian presents the shocking evidence about the 9/11 attacks that do not seem to fit with the official story reported by the U.S. government. Griffin then emphasizes the importance of the tragedies of 9/11, and how the Christians of the world should be the ones that address this issue that is playing a major role in our society.

Griffin is not just putting the word "Christian" on his title to sell his book to a niche market - he truly tries to reach an audience that he feels should have an impact on how the "truth" should be revealed.

I bought this book because I was dominantly interested in the tenth chapter ("A Call to Reflection and Action"). I think it is an outstanding follow-on to Dr. Griffin's prior books ("The New Pearl Harbor: Disturbing Questions about the Bush Administration and 9/11" and "The 9/11 Commission Report: Missions and Distortions"). The three (as well his fourth on debunking the debunkers) are superbly researched, meticulously footnoted, well-argued, and ought to be required reading for every Congressional representative and every serious mainstream journalist in the US.

Dr. Griffin has made a critical distinction between "cumulative" and "deductive" arguments. Through the course of these books, and summarized nicely in the first half of "Christian Faith...", Dr. Griffin reviews the breadth and depth of the cumulative evidence now amassed, so vast that another has suggested that "it's like drinking from a fire hose".

He proves that the prima facie case that the Bush Administration orchestrated the attacks of 9/11 remains unrefuted.

But the critical thrust clearly is on why we must pay attention to what he has to say, and why we must address the implications of it.

From the book:

"Many people who know or at least suspect the truth about 9/11 probably believe that revealing it would be so disturbing to the American psyche, the American form of government, and global stability that it is better to pretend to believe the official version. I would suggest, however, that any merit this argument may have had earlier has been overcome by more recent events and realizations. Far more devastating to the American psyche, the American form of government, and the world as a whole will be the continued role of those who brought us 9/11, because the values reflected in that horrendous event have been reflected in the Bush Administration's lies to justify the attack on Iraq, its disregard for environmental science and the Bill of Rights, its criminal negligence both before and after Katrina, and now its apparent plan not only to weaponize space but also to authorize the use of nuclear weapons in a pre-emptive strike."

And another:

"Burns Weston, a professor of law, has said that the `disparity between official 9/11 `spin' and independently researched 9/11 fact [is] so glaring as to suggest the possibility of a constitutional crisis unlike anything our country had ever known'."

This statement takes on added gravity in light of the repeated and recent announcements that the Vice President and the President are not subject to Congressional oversight.

In addition to addressing the socio-political issues, however, Dr. Griffin asks us to examine them in light of Christian values. And there is where he not only nails down the indictment, but also the conviction. As moral and spiritual people, we are obligated to examine the evidence, to discuss it in light of our beliefs and values, and then to act in concordance with them.

From the book:

"... It is only when we realize that the attacks of 9/11 were carried out and covered up for the sake of America's global domination project that we can, as I have suggested elsewhere, fully grasp the extent to which this project is propelled by fanaticism based on a deeply perverted value system."

Griffin's books only get better. "Christian Faith and the Truth Behind 9/11" not only provides enough evidence to prove the official narrative of the events of 9/11 is a farce (and U.S government complicity as a necessary condition for such a conclusion), he provides a philosophical and theological background for such an analysis.

Griffin demonstrates that America is in fact an Empire--an Evil Empire, to be precise. Like Rome before it, and like the more recent Third Reich of Nazi Germany, America is an empire founded upon terror and bully tactics disguised as "promoting Democracy" "fighting evil". And, as such, it has nowhere to go but down.

However, like all such pathocratic systems, it will not go down without a fight. With nearly one million dead in Iraq as a direct result of American invasion and occupation, the psychopathic neoconservative junta is still actively cementing its hold on the American "republic".

Griffin rightly, in this writer's view, advocates a "thin" universal morality, founded not in mythology but in realism and conscience. The egotistical "end to evil" as Frum and Perle term their messianic war against cultural differences is founded in a simplistic and naive view of humanity. It promotes racist Chauvinism and genocide as a solution to global problems stemming from hypocritical American foreign policy and imperialism.

Griffin's ponerological approach to the analysis of American Empire, and its use of false-flag terrorism and black propaganda techniques is a welcome call to action to both Christians and non-Christians.

(Hide Review...)  THE ONLY BAD QUESTION IS THE ONE NEVER ASKED: CONSIDER CAREFULLY HERE THE BEST QUESTIONS FOR OUR DAY.
Reviewer Permalink
Just like your teacher told you, or your father, the only dumb question is the one never asked. That is the only bad question.

But like the Reverend Father Hans Kung daring to place a question mark after the simple word Infallible, many whose complacency and belief system could receive a strengthening dose of question feel such uncomfortable consideration bad. Martin Luther was roundly condemned for posting a number of questions for discussion on a cathedral door where such questions were normally posted. Dr. Griffin, Professor Emeritus of Theology at Claremont, he as well, for asking us questions concerning what has become the basic article of faith of our current administration's foreign and domestic policy, and comparing that secular and indeed imperialist faith with our core Christian beliefs, is considered by many a very bad questioner.

Yet these are questions we ignore at our peril, at the peril of our liberty and our peace and our moral essence as compassionate and faithful Christians in action in this world.

Dr. Griffin as in his The New Pearl Harbor: Disturbing Questions About the Bush Administration and 9/11 presents compelling evidence regarding the real Bush administration role, and the actual lack of IRaqi role, in the 9/11/01 national tragedy. You can laugh away Michael Moore's readily accessible facts drawn from the primary sources in his Fahrenheit 9/11; what is less facile is denying the solid evidence presented in a careful and scholarly manner by Professor Griffin.

Professor Griffin, as a devote believer in the Christian Faith and professor of our theology, furthermore takes his findings and presents them in the true light of our Faith, our Beliefs as Christians, and our moral imperatives as individuals, as a People of God, as Church and as a nation. Whereas our recent presidents claim to battle the evil empire of the moment, Dr. Griffin dedicates chapters to revealing the truth of Jesus and the Roman Empire which crucified Him as an insurgent. Dr. Griffin examines the true natures of the Divine and the Demonic, and asks how demonic evil touches the new American Empire after 9/11. Dr. Griffin closes on a moving call to reflection and action which we believers first in Jesus CHrist must not ignore at the peril of our eternal souls. We must hear now this prophetic call to peace and compassion, to the restoration of moral relations based on the Gospel commandments and our true unshakable immutable Faith. Please read this book.

A very important book for every American and Christian to read and to contemplate within the contexts of our Faith and our true Patriotism, and, having contemplated these truths, to act, for peace and for justice, for the development in peaceful society for all humanity, to make real the Gospel we as a faithful people of God are compelled to preach and to live.

Griffin has been seduced by fame and money. it's really rather sad.

Certainly a unique book, this latest work by David Ray Griffin deserves a wider audience than it may possibly get. Despite evidently encompassing a majority of the American public, the 9/11 truth movement remains currently marginalised by the mainstream media. Griffin himself recently appeared on a religious-themed BBC chat show to discuss issues regarding 9/11, and had his words framed with shots of the official-story booster interviewer making `surely you can't be serious' faces throughout. There's a weird comedy involved in seeing the mainstream press attempt to paint Griffin as a kook, when even the vaguest cursory examination of factual events shows the official story to be composed of misdirection, bluster and distortion, and Griffin's work to be scrupulously thoughtful, well-researched and accurate.

Griffin's earlier THE 9/11 COMMISSION REPORT: OMISSIONS AND DISTORTIONS is a highly recommended volume as it methodically exposes the inarguable misdirection and elaborate stupidity of the official government-approved story in an easy-to-follow manner, right down to Griffin deconstructing the language used in the official report to show self-contained `blunders' or `errors' in the writing that seem deliberately placed there by the Commission Report authors to obscure weaknesses in the official story that couldn't be covered-up in any other way. (As I noted in my review of Griffin's earlier book, there are sections in the official Report that had me laughing at the gall of the Commission authors once I observed the sections that Griffin notes - read his book to see what I mean). Griffin's OMISSIONS AND DISTORTIONS volume convinced me of the pleasantly high quality of his writing, and made me receptive to following the arguments in this new book. I'm not currently that religious, so I was prepared to scratch my chin at some of the eventual theological material here, but I needn't have worried. The religious content in CHRISTIAN FAITH AND THE TRUTH BEHIND 9/11 works as background to and support for Griffin's larger argument, which is mainly occupied with critiquing the role of imperialist regimes and nations. Amid a wide-ranging discussion, Griffin notes how 9/11 is just the latest tool used by cynical, corrupt elites to bludgeon the masses towards an unwelcome destination. To my mind, non-religious people can, if they like, view the presence of theological moments in this volume (all in themselves noticeably more interesting and thoughtful than anticipated - Griffin's critical thinking remains pleasantly intact) as a poetic method to deal with the ugly, black void of immeasurable cynicism and cruelty that doubtlessly swirls inside the hearts of thuggish troublemakers like Dick Cheney. (Note - I find it genuinely unfair that my sister's faithful, intelligent and affectionate blue-heeler dog died the other day, but Dick Cheney, who has suffered multiple heart attacks and who wields with Rumsfeld and a few others much of the burden of suspicion surrounding the deep, long-term planning of the 9/11 attacks, is still going strong as I write this. See pages 460-462 of Jim Marrs' excellent THE TERROR CONSPIRACY - also available on Amazon - for guest contributor Barbara Honegger's convincing naming-of-names to get a reasonable approximation of the whole honor roll of 9/11 conspirators likely present in and around the current US government).

All up, Griffin's latest remains a solid and important book about 9/11. CHRISTIAN FAITH AND THE TRUTH BEHIND 9/11 opens with an incredibly strong summary of documented European false-flag activity, covering Gladio, the Brabant massacres, and the Counter-Guerilla attacks in Turkey (where fascist troops, at the request of the Pentagon and CIA, attacked, raped and executed innocent Kurdish villagers). Griffin also slams the US Department of State's disgusting, non-committal, face-saving `rebuttal' of their own documented involvement in those atrocities, noting how the US Government is reduced to quoting Iran / Contra conspirator Michael Ledeen and a vague, 13 year old quote from Jonathan Kwitny in THE NATION, whilst those `rebuttals' are contradicted by statements made by ex-CIA deputy director Ray Cline, among others. I'm not surprised that the US Department of State is embarrassed by its own history here, and it's easy to see why elements of the US Government are viewed with suspicion and disgust in others countries, even prior to the thoroughly vile and cynical behaviour of the current Bush administration.

Griffin then continues with the best (lengthy, interview and transcript heavy) discussion of the collapse of the WTC buildings I've yet read in print. Firefighter William Reynolds swore at his battalion chief to evacuate the north tower as "..they blew up the other one." Another firefighter, Louie Cacchioli, walked out of the later hearings in disgust when the 9/11 Commission member's aggressive distortion and slanting of his words became obvious. (The Kean / Zelikow / Hamilton cover-up here shows its true colors again as a PR whitewash more interested in reassuring the public of the validity of the Bush administration's story than conducting anything resembling an actual investigation). Griffin's gentleman tendency towards restraint and understatement allows for a memorable phrase when he notes how much of the testimony of firefighters and key eyewitnesses is "..in strong tension with the official story".

The theological section of the book isn't too long, but strikes me as the work of a man attempting to come to grips with evidence of major deceit and corruption, and using everything in his arsenal to document and attack it. Griffin makes clever analogies between the behavior of earlier Christian writers and their struggles under Imperial Rome, noting how Rome itself used terrorist-style threats and acts of aggression when it suited. There's much to digest here, and I like how Griffin keeps largely away from the dreamy, semi-fictitious elements of religious thought and towards things backed up by historical documentation, even going so far as to place some early Christian writing in the light of the economic realities of the times. I learnt a number of things here that I didn't expect to, and find myself in the position where I'd be receptive to reading an entire book by Griffin on theology, just for the unexpectedly welcome mental workout. Griffin's theological comments branch out to include discussion of philosophy and politics. He's an excellent writer and I was impressed by the depth of his thinking here.

Griffin's closing chapters return to tackling the harsh realities of the NeoCons, the Project for a New American Century and the cynical imperialist ambitions of the Bush administration in a clear and perceptive manner. As with the rest of the book, Griffin makes reference to a wide range of useful political books and articles, including, for example, Naomi Klein and accomplished anti-nuclear campaigner Helen Caldicott. Griffin makes the point that a true `global democracy', rather than the mock façade of compassion and assistance used by Bush to mask an aggressive corporate agenda, is a likely necessity if we are to survive the various forthcoming environmental crises of the 21st century.

I've only touched on some of the valuable and thought-provoking material to be found in this volume. In just a short amount of time Griffin has moved high up into my list of personal favorite writers, and he maintains that level of quality here. I'd be happy if this book was embraced by religious and non-religious people alike, as I think it definitely warrants the attention of both. This is a book I look forward to reading again.

One does not need to completely agree with everything Griffin has written to be made aware that information and doctrine must go hand in hand. That is what this book makes very clear. It will blow out the cob webbs in your church history, your theology and your responsible citizenship. While Part 2 of the book is the solid content to challenge the Christian citizen, Part 1 is a necessary, if often over-detailed, basis to help the reader understand the context in which the Christian community finds itself to be in this perilous time. It provoked me to buy additional copies to give to others because it is such an important volume to be read.

I can't believe my own faith community's cowardice and rebelion against Jesus's teachings! It was the Presbyterian Press who published this work, yet those in that flock (here in Columbus, Ohio) don't know how to use thier faith to spark the work that God has shown needs to be done. Even those who claim to be workers for justice and peace rebel against this work. How can there be justice and peace without truth?

I can't live in a society where I must declare something that is obviously black as being white just because that is what everyone tells me it is...what kind of peace is that? The absence of war and conflict is not peace. A house of Peace can only be secured after we build her foundation on the rock of truth. Truth may be scary, but the lack of it is much more treacherous.

There is no room for fear in faith. Faith without action is like a scholar without a forum. What good is knowing the truth if we don't have the courage to get off our ever widening butts and do something about it? Christians, please don't think just because the truth is this bloody that you can just bury it. NO. Because this truth is so bloody, you have an obligation to expose it for what it is...a funeral for our friend, lady Liberty. You pay her no respect if you fail to bring up the truth to any audience you can. You allow more soldiers to die if we fail to spread the message of truth...the "good news" and the bad.

Giffin is right! "Religions of the world unite, you have nothing to lose but your impotence!"

what books like this one fail to do is account for the massive amount of pre-planted explosive material, its ignition sourcing, how such material could have been concealed from construction workers, building engineers and inspectors and the occupants of the buildings. Oh, wait. anyone who suspected anything (lets say a few hundred saw the material in place, or a few thousand) they were co-opted by the ultra secret organization that planned the events of 9-11 or disappeared/murdered/dumped into the still fresh cement. Right? now imagine the number of people who would have had to concocted and carried out planting this material all above suspicion of course. are they all dead now, or silenced by money or threats to their family or flown out of the country to live out their lives on a tropical island? one only has to apply Occam's razor to the question of how the buildings came down to realize that such flights of fancy, as is this book and all its ilk, are just that...elaborate, hysterical, paranoid, and ultimately pathetic flights of fancy.

The first part of the book provides a factual background for the argument that their was government collusion in 9/11. It is extremely persuasive. The second part of the book discusses what the Christian reaction should be, based on a comparison between the Roman Empire and current political thinking in the U.S. The similarities are striking. It would be a stretch to say that every American should read this book because there are many who would refuse to acknowledge the possibility of collusion no matter what evidence is presented. If you're not a fan of Fox News, this book should be a "must read."

Mr. Griffin's book is clearly a well-researched effort to expose 9/11 as the inside job, false-flag operation, it obviously was. However, because Mr. Griffin uses the whole second half of the book to promote his liberal "Christian" agenda, I find myself loathe to lend it to people unless I go through a lengthy disclaimer on that section. As a fundamentalist, literal Bible believer, I try not to stumble other believers and non-believers with false doctrine. Mr. Griffin does perform a service by bringing the conspiracy to light in a venue that appeals to the more intellectual reader.

After reading many excellent reviews it is difficult to contribute another one that would go beyond the best review i've so far read: Paul Craig Roberts, "Is American Democracy Too Feeble To Deal With 9/11?" (google it!). Let me just say this: David Ray Griffin's call to reflection and action is a MUST READ for those who really care about the teachings of JESUS - blessings and peace upon him - and wholeheartedly endorse the following moral rules:

Don't murder other people. Don't cause other people to starve. Don't steal other people's natural resources, such as their land, water, and oil. Don't steal other people's personal property. Don't deprive others of their basic freedoms. Don't cause others needless pain. Don't terrorize other people. Don't humiliate other people.

As a Muslim i wholeheartedly endorse these principles! And belonging to the Muslim community that is worldwide victimized by immoral wars fought for business reasons i strongly hope that more and more people calling themselves Christians wake up and read carefully David Ray Griffin's masterpiece that is introduced by Voltaire's saying:

"Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities."

This I think is the best single book on the subject of 9/11. Not only does it lucidly, succinctly, and fairly thoroughly lay out the case against the official version, but it also deals profoundly with the fundamental questions of how followers of Christ (and, I must say, others who are motivated by Christian morality) need to approach the issue of the truth about 9/11.

It is all but certain 9/11 was a case of MIHOP (Make It Happen On Purpose), as Griffin makes so eloquently clear in this book. I've looked at DER SPIEGEL and THE PROGRESSIVE on the newstand this week, and they both carry articles trying to dispel or "debunk" the MIHOP thesis. They fail miserably. I've yet to see an article from their side, for example, addressing the questions of why the timelines were changed when it came to Cheney taking charge in the, as it were, "Bunker" and when orders were made to send out intercepting fighters.

The second part of the book I found fascinating, but I can't concur with some of Griffin's globalist and anti-nationalist solutions to our predicament. I certainly do agree with his opposition to the thrust of American foreign policy, especially since the coming to power of the man who said in a debate with Mr. Gore that we must be "humble" in pursuing our foreign policy.

(Hide Review...)  Discovering the courage to confront a demonic American empire
Reviewer Permalink
This is truly two books in one. Each half is vitally important to all Americans, but especially to those of us who wish to be identified as Christians.

Part I explores the question of how complicit members of the Bush administration were in the tragedy of 9/11. I would summarize the possible alternatives in this way: Option #1: Members of the Bush administration were directly complicit in the tragedy of 9/11. Option #2: Members of the Bush administration deliberately allowed the tragedy of 9/11 to happen. Option #3: Members of the Bush administration carelessly allowed the tragedy of 9/11 to happen. Option #4: Members of the Bush administration did everything humanly possible to prevent the tragedy of 9/11 from happening.

I really don't believe anyone in his or her right mind even remotely affirms option #4 any longer. Most of us probably started, five years ago, with option #3. The astonishing thing is that a majority of Americans now fall somewhere within the first two options.

Griffin solidly affirms option #1, and has written widely on this "New Pearl Harbor" and the "Omissions and Distortions" of the 9/11 Commission (two earlier books on the subject). In Part I he offers compelling evidence that 9/11 was an American "false flag" operation in which previously planted explosives allowed the THREE towers of the World Trade Center--including one building not even struck by the passenger jets!--to implode in the manner of controlled demolitions. The point is not necessarily that option #1 is absolutely true, though Griffin believes the logic he pursues clearly demonstrates that. The point is that this is a vital issue about which we Americans ought to be crying loudly to be examined by some subsequent commission of inquiry that will not simply gloss over or totally ignore discrepancies, inconsistencies in testimony, and unexamined facts.

However, I regard Part II to be the real blockbuster portion of this publication. There, Griffin patiently and with painstaking scholarship uncovers half a century of developments that have led to what is now nothing other than an American Empire seeking global domination and manifesting anything but benign tendencies. In fact, Griffin charges the present course of USA's geopolitical and economic decisions to be nothing less than demonic! I came away from that tutorial with the realization that everything he is saying there is true regardless of whether or not his readers agree with him on the underlying agents of 9/11.

So dig into this vitally important book and stay with it. If you're not into where he's taking you in Part !, read Part II by itself. It stands on its own. And it challenges the church in America to discover a way of being faithful that is not unlike the witness of the church of the first three centuries struggling to survive inside the equally demonic Roman Empire.

Since I have signed my name to this review, a disclosure is in order. I have known the author personally for over 40 years and consider him a good friend. He has challenged my complacency and troubled my conscience.

One in three Americans has serious doubts about the conspiracy theory offered by the U.S. government that 19 Arabs armed with box-cutters were responsible for the hijacking of four airplanes, and the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.

A Scripps Howard poll found: "More than a third of the American public suspects that federal officials assisted in the 9/11 terrorist attacks or took no action to stop them so the United States could go to war in the Middle East".

Yet major news media refuse to investigate alternative hypotheses offered by dozens of independent researchers and groups. When they do report on them, they are dismissive of these hypotheses, but do not address the evidence offered.

Until last week, had I been asked where should one begin to examine the alternative hypotheses, and the vast amount of evidence available, I would have recommended "The 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions" by David Ray Griffin, Professor of Philosophy of Religion and Theology.

Now I'm not so sure.

I have just finished reading a new book that claims, "9/11 was a 'false-flag' attack, orchestrated by forces within the U.S. government".

This attack was used, claims the author, "to launch the kind of 'clash of civilizations' that Samuel Huntington had predicted. As illustrated by the fact that all the countries on the Pentagon's hit list are predominantly Muslim, this war pits the predominantly Christian West (along with its ally Israel) against the Islamic world."

"One of the evils of this civilizational war," writes the author, "is that it has implanted in Western minds an association between 'Muslim' and 'terrorist,' so that Muslims tend to be regarded as guilty until proven innocent."

The author calls upon the church to reflect on the "truth of this thesis -- that 9/11 was a false-flag operation carried out by forces within our own government in order to advance the American empire." He urges them to reflect upon "the implication of this book's thesis" and suggests several courses of action.

For Muslim leaders, who are genuinely concerned about their community, and for all Americans, the truth about 9/11 may be the most important issue of our time.

So where should one begin to examine the alternative hypotheses, and the vast amount of evidence available?

Read "Christian Faith and the Truth Behind 9/11" by David Ray Griffin -- the book that Hugo Chavez should have held up during his speech to the United Nations General Assembly on September 20, 2006.

Several months ago, a friend encouraged me to watch a chilling documentary on 9/11 entitled, "Loose Change." (If you Google it, you can watch it on the internet.) The film's main thesis is that 9/11 was an inside job. Not knowing the motives of the authors of the film, I wanted to see who else was investigating the issue.

I then heard of Griffin's book, "Christian Faith and the Truth Behind 9/11." The first section of the book lays out serious discrepancies which challenge what we've been told about 9/11. It was like watching "Loose Change" all over again, but this time written by a Presbyterian minister who spent 3 years researching the issue. It is published by St John's Press.

Regardless of whom or what you think brought the towers down, Griffin's expose of the CIA's ugly record of overthrowing foreign governments and harming civilians cannot be denied. He reminds Christians that Jesus was killed because his revolutionary egalitarian message threatened the Roman Empire's agenda. And now, America is the new Roman Empire, causing tremendous suffering to millions, and Griffin wants church folks to get active. Like Martin Luther King Jr and thousands of religious people addressing segregation in the 60's, Griffin wants the modern church movement to address global economic apartheid and global warming. Huge tasks! Others will have to figure out the methods. The first step is to realize the damage our government does, and to want to change it. This book begins that process.

On Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006, al-Jazeera television played a portion of video sent them recently by al-Qaida. The video pre-dates the WTC attacks because it shows bin Laden meeting with some of the known hijackers as well as with "lieutenants" who were killed or captured shortly after 9/11. Two of the hijackers were shown preparing their "last will and testaments", and bin Laden is shown urging followers to pray for the hijackers that their aim will be true and that Allah will give them success. We now know as well that bin Laden has openly taken credit for the attacks.

In light of such evidence, how can anyone believe that 9/11 was an inside job of the US government? The conspiracy would have to involve not only the highest echelons of our government, but also bin Laden as one of our agents, and al-Jazeera as a witting or unwitting assistant. Of course, one could argue that the CIA staged the whole video after the fact, using doubles and an expert mimic of bin Laden's voice, etc. But such a conclusion seems to border on the psychotic, not critical common sense.

I agree wholeheartedly with the author's contentions about the complicity of 'our own' government in this event. But in most cases, trying to discuss it is like followers of different faiths arguing the virtues of comparative religions: No matter how much an American disagrees with his leader's policies, he does it from the perspective of he and his leaders nonetheless still all being on the 'same side'. GUESS WHAT? That is an ASSUMPTION. I myself see no reason that the third-generation of an oil-soaked, CIA-affiliated, selling-munitions-to-the-Germans -in -WWII millionaire family has any more sympathy for the average
American and his 'way of life' than any foreign power would. These people act for the enhancement of their own way of life, according to what they can get away with..period. But such foundational beliefs are usually not arguable points, but rather looked at with horror or amusement by the true-believers. GOOD NEWS: Perhaps I'm wrong : At this point, the message does seem to be getting through, and what was a hopeless minority in 2001 is rapidly becoming the great majority. Spread the word.

So many in the "Christian Community" have blindly supported and not questioned Bush's motives during and after the 9/11 attacks. It is great to see that someone is coming out who isn't a radical liberal and saying, "Hey, this doesn't make sense... we want answers." I have read some ignorant reviews on the book and it only makes sense, our President says he's a Christian... apparently these people believe that God is doing the evil work for him. I found this book to be presenting scientific facts, to the point, and raising some very strong, valid points regarding the inconsistent stories and evidence from the 9/11 attacks, events, and the 9/11 commission report. I thoroughly enjoyed this read and it helped to put all the scattered questions all in front of me regarding the mystery of 9/11. I would recommend this book to anyone who has even one question about 9/11 and even those staunch right-wings who refuse to believe their government could fail them.

I am shocked to find out that Presbyterian Publishers would publish an obvious fabrication of the events on September 11th. Just like other 9/11 conspiracy propaganda tracks, David Griffin's Christian Faith and the Truth behind 9/11 is the lowest form of literary garbage on the market today.

This book has no place in the discusion about 9/11 because it is false and the conclusions he spouts about faith are the worst form of twisting Christianity I have seen since I read some of Adolf Hitler's speeches.

Mr. Griffin's premise is a lie from the very beginning. His so called research consists of viewing other conspiracy sources and web sites. His" "rigorous arguments" contains no more facts than moonbeams, UFO's and the flat earth society. His main focus, as all of these fantasy writers proclaim, is to create a vision of our government attempting to take over the world, kill us all and that "they' must be stopped. The motive behind this is to remove President Bush from office. I find it revealing that you chose the highlight a review by Ray McGovern on your site. Mr. McGovern is a self proclaimed Anti-Semite who is preaching that 9/11 was inspired from Israel and has repeatedly called for President Bush's impeachment. Even Democratic Party officials have condemned Mr. McGovern's assertions. With this kind of company, it is easy to see why some would feel that Mr. Griffin's work was well reasoned.

If one wants a true scientific and through study of the 9/11 conspiracy's, they should read Debunking 9/11 Myths by Dunbar & Reagan by Popular Mechanics. In that book, which sites over 300 accredited engineering, construction, military, aviation and eyewitness sources, one finds that the main points used by these theories are complete lies for a purpose. Who should a reader trust to know what they are talking about, experts in their respected fields or a cyber-surfing retired theologian with a political point to make?

By publishing this fiction as a credible fact, John Knox Press have put the Presbyterian Church behind this travesty. What is next for Presbyterian Publishers? Holocaust Denial books? Maybe an exposé on how the Knights Templar and Free Masons where behind 9/11 to hide their power and treasure? Perhaps a photo album by Adnan Hajj on Photoshopped images from Lebanon.

As a life long Presbyterian, Elder, and American, I am horrified, insulted and angry that my denomination would give credence to this type of trash. Mr. Griffin has the right to believe and speak any form of falsehoods he wants. However, my Church does not have to publish it.

David Ray Griffin is arguably one of the deepest -- and most outrageous -- thinkers in America today, and this book reflects both deep thought and disturbing conclusions.

In a nutshell, Griffin contends that 9/11 was an American "black ops" -- or "false flag" -- attack orchestrated by Cheney, Rumsfeld et al to galvanize Americans into supporting a war on Iraq. The author, using material obtainable through public records, clearly shows that war with Iraq was a primary goal of the Bush Administration from the outset. This is shown through the resurrection of the controversial "preemptive war" strategy put forth by Paul Wolfowitz and Dick Cheney during Gulf War I, but which was repudiated by Bush Senior, Brent Scowcroft, Colin Powell and others.

It is inconceivable that American leaders would engage in this type of action. Yet the evidence that Griffin mounts demands attention and reflection.

The most valuable section of this book, in this reader's mind, is the center part in which Griffin lays out the integral responsibility of faithful Christians to recognize and resist the demonic forces of America's imperial foreign policy. Griffin is clearly on firm ground in this section, reflecting his long career as a preeminent theologian and seminary professor.

If following Jesus Christ means comforting the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable, then David Ray Griffin succeeds admirably in this dense, disturbing, but ultimately worthwhile book. Just prepare to be confronted with the unthinkable, and then challenged to think deeply about it and come to your own conclusions.

Part One of this great book is a collection of essays that are among the best, and most objective, writings on the events of 9/11. No has presented these serious questions more directly or more compassionately.

Part Two gives us a clear message. Dr. Griffin shows that we, as creative and therefore self-determined children of God, can no longer ignore the demonic within our own culture.

Faced with the knowledge of 9/11 fraud, we now know what Jesus would do.

What a fantastic book. Griffin discusses how all the evils of the world were created by the American government including slavery, communism and acne. There is no doubt that the entire 9/11 hoax was a product of a giant conspiracy involving millions of people, including New Yorkers who acted like the twin towers were falling but knew otherwise. Then there is the big hole in Manhattan, a big hoax. I just wish he had revealed how the U.S. government has implanted computer chips in our brains at birth.

(Hide Review...)  David Ray Griffin - a man for truth who demands to be heard

I bought the book and just started reading it. I watched the 9/11 Scholars for Truth program on CSPAN - WOW. I saw 9/11 unfold before my eyes on TV. I heard the voices of the people around me in confusion...and then I obsessed about why the secret service didn't whisk our president out of that classroom that fateful day.

Left and right people were fearful, not knowing where the next hijacked plane was going to crash, yet our president was allowed to continue to read to a classroom of children with an airport less than 10 miles away at an event announced days prior in the media.

This tells me the secret service knew WHAT and WHERE the targets WERE and they were not president Bush, so he was safe. Their entire purpose is protecting him, yet on that day they left him exposed and unprotected...but only if they didn't know what was going on.

David Ray Griffin has taken the kind of risk that Jesus took on a daily basis - challenging the establishment to spread his words of truth.

All spiritual people who believe their bodies are just a temple for their soul, must do the same, starting now.

All Christians must do the same.

Fear should not dominate your life. Fear of losing your "stuff", your job or your friends/acceptance should not dominate your life. Even the fear of losing your life should not stop truth from spreading its light.

If you are mired knee deep in the material world so much so that you are not able to make the decision to risk losing the comforts of your physical body by demanding and seeking truth, how are you going to get into heaven, exactly?

Walk the right path of truth and love instead of the wrong path of material goods and not believing God will take care of your needs when necessary.

I feel I should put out a disclaimer before I begin my review: If you've never read any of DRG's other books, this one may be too much for you to handle right off the bat. I recommend one of his previous works such as "9/11 Commision Report, Ommissions and Distortions" to get a better feel of how much information (and disinformation) is out there.

Having said that, I have nothing but good things to say about Christian Faith and the Truth Behind 9/11. Griffin is a very accomplished writer and he does a wonderful job of laying down the groundwork for 9/11 as well as showing just how common false-flag operations are in the history of the world. These attacks were as un-christian as anything this world has ever seen. The fact that they were then used to justify even further anti-christian ideas is simply put, disgusting.

If you want a rosy picture of what happened on 9/11, buy the Popular Mechanics book. If you want the truth (no matter how sick it makes you), buy this book.

Griffin's first two books, "The New Pearl Harbor" and "9/11 Commission Report - Ommissions and Distortions" are two of the most important books I have read in my life. Griffin's new book solidifies my belief that indeed our government was complicit in the atrocities of 9/11. Tom Fletcher, another reviewer, does an excellent job in summarizing the book, so I won't go there.

It is unfortunate that their are some reviews that give this book such low ratings. I am quite confident these "reviewers" have not even bothered to read the book. The negativity is the typical knee-jerk reaction from people that have been hypnotised by our government and the media to believe the official story without asking questions and seeking the truth. Thank goodness there are people out there like David Griffin that are acting like true patriots and are doing their best to get the truth out there. Keep in mind that a healthy 40+ percent of the American public (even higher overseas) believe that the government was somehow involved in 9/11. This percentage is growing daily as more people wake up and realize our government is not infallible. They lied us into a war that killed tens of thousands of innocent people, including over 2,600 of American troops. Whose to say they are not covering up the atrocities of 9/11?
